Forgive me for not qualifying my comments thusly: the huge majority of comics could easily be described as shallow and vapid, while a tiny minority have something insightful to say.
Well, if you hit the comedy clubs on a regular basis you tend to see alot of dreck before you see the greats. The last time I was in one, Jackie Mason was trying out some new material (this was in the boonies). He was brilliant! My husband saw Andy Kaufman before he was famous and said he was a frigging genuis (I believe it). Oddly enough, I saw Robin Williams at the Improv in L.A. in the late 1970s - before “Mork and Mindy” and didn’t like him!
