He’s right. The attention being paid to these people is embarrassing.
It is absurd indeed..
One day, this couple will likely be King and Queen of all 16 nations of the Commonwealth realm. As King, William would be “Head of State” for each of those nations (including the UK, Canada, Australia, New Zealand ...). Also, as King, William would be “Head of the Commonwealth”, an organization of 53 nations, with a population over 2 billion people. While the epicentre of wedding frenzy will be in Britain, the event will be meaningful for over 1/3 of the world's population.
We, in the Commonwealth realm, separate the roles of “Head of State” and “Head of Government”. We venerate the former, as the symbol of our respective nations (and a common link). We treat the later with no more or less respect than any elected politician deserves.
The U.S.of A. had a successful revolution, to rid itself of the Monarchy. By not separating the roles of “Head of State” and “Head of Government”; you have allowed many of the trappings of monarchy to slide back in, and rest on the office of the POTUS. Consider the pomp and circumstance surrounding the “State of the Union” address, and the excessive difference shown to the POTUS at these events.
