Boy Scout accused of stabbing school resource officer

Palm Harbor, Florida - Students at Carwise Middle School are planning a prayer vigil, after investigators say a 7th grader stabbed the school resource officer.

"It's just sad," Kimberly Frazier said while dropping off her son Wednesday morning.

"I mean, something's not right in that child's life. It's really sad."

Ofr. Kenneth Fridlund is recovering from surgery and is in good condition. Investigators went to St. Joseph's Hospital Wednesday to question him.

According to the Pinellas County Sheriff's Office, Fridlund was questioning the boy about 11 bottles of gasoline in a duffle bag, when the teenager stabbed him in the stomach Tuesday.

The 13-year-old later told detectives that he'd brought the bottles to school to scare some kids who bullied him.

10 News is not disclosing the suspect's identity until he is officially charged with a felony, but in the photograph on his Facebook page, he is wearing a Boy Scout uniform.

Classmates say he was teased about wearing the uniform to school almost every day.

"They were just bullying him, because he was wearing the outfit to school and stuff," says Nicole Carver.

Loren Jackson says, "I'm guessing this led from bullying and this is his way of taking it out."

A spokesman for the Pinellas Boy Scout Council says the teen was a member of Troop 64.

Bill Davis says, "We are concerned about the boy and the victim... the Boy Scouts certainly don't condone this type of violence."

Troop leaders also tell 10 News that the teen was well-liked in the troop and that he was a role model for the other kids.

"He wore his uniform to school [and was] very proud of it," said scout master John Ruckart.

"And he was actually teased by the boys at school for being a scout and being in uniform."

The suspect remains at a local hospital undergoing a psych evaluation.

When that's complete, he'll be taken to the Juvenile Assessment Center. It's expected he'll be charged with attempted murder and possession of fire bombs.

Thursday morning, a school spokesperson told 10 News that the student prayer vigil is in the planning stages. It's expected to be held in the next several days at the school flag pole one morning before school.

Something doesn’t sit right about this kid stabbing the counselor, as in why? He’s busted for the bottles of gas, stabbing the counselor wasn’t going to make it go away.

So I have to wonder if the counselor was offering to make it go away in exchange for “favors”, that the young man responded to violently?

Just saying I think there is more to the story.

It sounds like he snapped but I wonder if he’d had run ins with the resource officer previously.

"The 13-year-old later told detectives that he'd brought the bottles to school to scare some kids who bullied him."

I'm not sure how that would intimidate bullies - they'd just take it from him. Gasoline is generally an ambush weapon.

How sad is it, that that is the first thought that jumps to mind? The “helping” professions are full of people who are “helping” themselves to the innocence of others.

My son went to that school last year before he moved up to high school. It is a very nice school in a really good neighborhood. He remembers the kid because he wore his scout uniform every day. He has some sympathy for the kid because I guess the teasing he got was pretty relentless.

My personal feeling on why this is happening now but didn't happen in “our day” is because the schools were allowed much more latitude in discipline. Also; they were much more lenient to a fighter who was defending themselves or were provoked. Today a student defending themselves are punished the same.

Sad. We can’ just go back to the old rules. I wouldn't trust the low intellect, unmotivated staff at his school to get the bread on the outside of a ham sandwich. Would never trust them to get it right when doling out punishment.

You could be right. I'm just sadly siting here, pining for the more innocent days of our once great nation. What happened to the days of when we kids in school thought the boys who wore their scout uniform looked cool. Very cool. //rhetorical

Basically, they’re a police officer that hangs out at a school all day.

school resource officer is a law enforcment officer. Badge and uniform - the whole bit. Assigned directly to the school.

the earlier post about the resource officer possibly being an abuser is out of line. A friend of mine goes to his church. I’ve met him a few times at school functions, there’s no reason for anyone to make that acusation.

I read the story and the same thing popped into my mind. It’s not like a “school employee” hasn’t taken the route of child abuse in the past.

From the article linked above:

So who is responsible here? The kids that bullied him? Teachers for not red flaqgging the kid prior to him making bombs? Another mom wrote, “Carwise’s administration has a history of ignoring bullies until the victim explodes.

[or a scoutmaster who should have known the kid well.]

A ‘school resource officer’ is a security person, usually with police training and police powers.

He could be a policeman who works for the city, and whose assigned beat is the school, or he could be a policeman who works directly for the school district.

Of course, no school can admit that it needs a police officer in the building full-time, so the term ‘school resource officer’ was dreamed up.

Makes him sound less like a cop, and more like some sort of librarian.

By law, when you work in a school you are a *mandated reporter*...red-flags should have been going up ALL over. Sad.

He was obviously disturbed as he often came to school in his boy scout uniform ...

Gotta love that open-minded tolerance in our gubmint schools.

I suppose if he had been wearing this t-shirt, all would have been well.

Sure, the administration would quickly have expelled anyone who even looked at him funny.

Maybe the kid is crazy - certainly the gasoline is a bizarre idea, although the knife made sense - but even if he’s nutty as baklava, a boy ought to be able to wear his Scout uniform without being harassed about it. I hate schools.
