Red bugs that look like chiggers [Vanity]

Posted on 04/05/2011 4:29:55 PM PDT by camerongood210

Hi Fellow FReepers,

I got home this afternoon and noticed many tiny (much smaller than an ant), red bugs crawling all around on my sidewalk and yard. Being that I grew up and still live in the south, I know how bad chiggers can be. But, after doing a little research this afternoon, it seems like these might not be chiggers after all because they are too large (chiggers are supposed to be microscopic). I have since done more research trying to figure out what these bugs are, but have hit a wall. I was hoping my fellow FReepers may help me to identify these bugs and ease my mind. I've got the feeling these things are crawling all over my skin as I type this.

Thanks guys

Rather than just killing them off you might try encouraging a peaceful transition to democracy.

When I was growing up we had these little red mites all over our window sills, or at least thats the only place we noticed them. They were also in my bed and bit the crud out of me. I was sent home from school because the school had no idea what they were and consequently neither did our doctor. after we got rid of them and mom washed the bed sheets, I never got bit again. I was the only one in the house that those little red mites liked.

My (born/raised Alabama) late mother would correct it to rhyme with the other, so it came out “Chigras”.

a mix of dishwasher detergent and 1% gasoline

...and a certain amount of water, I presume? Because what you describe there would be pretty thick, if I'm thinking right. How do you mix this stuff up, and how do you apply it?

Those look like bedbugs to me. Did you leave your mattress outside or something. Or they could be little anchovies.

Check that, photo you posted is Red Velvet Mites, not to be confused with Blue Velvet Mites that only infect the property of cheesey Polish pop singers from the 60’s.

I’m almost wishing I hadn’t come into this thread... Now I’ve got the willies - lol

My daughter went into the woods the other day with a friend. Keep in mind we still have some patches of snow around. I told her before they came into the house they had to check for ticks.

Well, it took about 5 seconds to start finding them. They ended up having to go on the porch and with me holding a blanket up and them taking their clothes off, systematically taking the ticks off of their bodies and clothes and in the process burning them along the way. Her friend ended up with 11 of them - that we know of and she had 8. They were all deer ticks.

I think we are going to have a bumper year for them. I told them no more going into the woods. It’s tough since all the kids love coming here and going back into our woods. It’s a beautiful field back there with a large lake and waterfall, but swampy conditions to get to it all.

I hate bugs!

That would make sense since I live in a somewhat wooded area.

Unidentified red bugs could be carriers of dysentary, rabies and botulism.

The really really tiny red bugs are harmless. We used to call them blood bugs.
