enough questions, already! ^ | today | tih

OK, am trying to see what the off-the-shelf options are for preventing cell phone and wifi usage inside a small building.

Yes, that's right. And no, I can't tell you why, because is all hush hush ;| ;|.

You wouldn't beleive what google returns when you search keyword "cellphone dampers."

OY!

Thanks in advance.

Um, no. Not legal here.

They use them in Iraq and Afghanistan to scramble cell phone signals, but that is to prevent IEDs from being detonated.

Pretty sure you’d get caught using one locally.

That is the rub isn't it? Actually, I'm representing the owner; however the question points out just how thorny an issue is it. Seems like a really fascinating topic.

I like that.

Gives me an idea...shouldn't aluminum foil come in assorted colors?

Bet you'll see it by this time next year.

Well, no I wouldn't, cuz if it's illegal I wouldn't do it or recommend it use.

I can see why it would be, though. Is there a definitive on that?

They make RF-blocking wallpaper for companies that are concerned about their internal Wi-Fi leaking out. Should work in both directions.

Pretty sure it is illegal to block any radio signal

Yeah, something with the FCC or some gubmint agency that monitors the frequencies.

Bet it would take maybe a day for them to zero in and nail ya.

Great plan though, I’d love to block cell phones in some places (libraries, nurseries, hospitals...my own home! lol)

What you wish to do is patently illegal. Private citizens are barred by law from jamming cell phone transmission.

I can only hope that if you carry through with your plan that you are caught and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.

Think screen room. Lindgren makes the ones I’m most familiar with.

Not cheap and not practical to do an entire building as a high attenuation screen room, but it’s done for smaller areas where signals must be prevented from entering or leaving.

Ah, I found this...

But don't expect to find cell phone blockers at the local Radio Shack - they're against Federal Communications Commission regulations because they interfere with emergency calls and the public airwaves. They are illegal to buy, sell, use, import or advertise.

A violation means an $11,000 fine, but the FCC's Enforcement Bureau has yet to bust one person anywhere in the country. "This is not a crime that they're going after," said Rob Bernstein, deputy editor at New York City-based Sync magazine.

Oh, fugawdsakes bite me, sarge. and lay off the caffeine for a while.

What you wish to do on your own private property, with regard to the use of a cell phone, might just still be your own freaking concern.

No. It is illegal to interfere with a legal radio signal. Blocking it from coming in your building is something entirely different.

I'm an RF engineer.
