“How long was he in Pakistan?”
That seems rather irrelevant.
It's very much relevant as to whether he was studying at Columbia, or traveling overseas for a year. There certainly doesn't seem to be any record of him being enrolled at Columbia during the 1981/1982 school year.

Being that the title of the article is “Does Obama have a criminal past,” could you please cite which US laws were violated if in fact he did stay in Pakistan for a year?
