Well, the political media is in DC, very much part of the Beltway establishment. And I think the media does indeed consider him a buffoon, since they keep treating him as a buffoon. And Trump has played the part.

Whatever his accomplishments, people know Trump from the tabloids: the Marla Maples thing, the bankruptcies, the hairpiece, the pro wrestling appearances, the call-ins to the old Howard Stern show where he'd taunt some gossip columnist about stealing his girl, the endless bombast and self-promotion. This isn't a man anyone is turning to for his judgment on serious political matters.
