Jimmer grows dimmer
ESPN ^ | March 25, 2011 | Rick Reilly

...So that's the end of Jimmermania. Saw it for myself. Caught the closing act. Not impressed.

SNIP

You can take off those "Romney-Fredette in 2012" T-shirts now.

Except for a stretch...Fredette was brutal.

Yes, he scored 32 points, but...took 29 shots...He seemed to be wearing a blindfold from the 3-point arc -- 3-for-15...committed six turnovers and wandered aimlessly through the lane on defense like Moses in the desert. I've seen dead people play better defense. At least they occasionally trip people.

SNIP

"He's a little Maravich," a guy in a BYU shirt told me.

No! No, he isn't! He's not within a mile of Mardi Gras floats of Maravich. Maravich could get his shot off from the bottom of a swimming pool. He could get 40 in handcuffs. He averaged 44 points a game in college (to Fredette's 28 this season) and that's without the 3-point shot. With it, studies of his game film have shown, he would have averaged over 55.

SNIP

...until he shows more interest in defense than a blind man has in rainbows, he's going to spend most of his NBA life sitting on padded folding chairs.

Florida missed a trey with 24 seconds to go and Fredette's man, Erving Walker...beat him to the long rebound. It wasn't hard. Fredette was nowhere to be found. I'm not even sure Fredette knew who his man was the entire night. Florida wound up with a reset and the last shot.

SNIP

Note to Jimmer: To get the ball, one must occasionally check one's man and/or box said man out. One did neither.

"...[his defense] has gotten progressively worse over the year," says Fredette's own teammate, Nick Martineau. "From the start, he's never really been accountable to it, but it's just gotten looser as the year's gone on..."

Just for people’s information, Rick Reilly is a liberal airhead. I don’t read him much, but he once wrote an article about praising his friend’s choice to get a sex change.

Jimmer didn’t have a great game, but in fairness, he was triple teamed whenever he got within 30 feet of the basket. And his teammates didn’t do a whole lot to pick up the slack.

Fredette is a legitimate scorer, but he plays no defense, which will expose him. Guys who play no defense generally don’t accomplish anything in the N.B.A.

He plays no defense because he is their offense. They cannot afford to get him in foul trouble. I thought the game went into overtime against Florida no less. It sounded like they got drubbed from the article posted.

He’ll be the next Adam Morrison in the NBA.

(IOW, he didn't know how to pass...something guards are especially s'posed to specialize in)

(Hmmm...I thought a 9-point loss bordered more on a drubbing)

In baseball, if you lose 12-8 in 10 innings, not exactly a shave.

It went to overtime. Did you even read the article? Or did you post it only because you thought it put a Mormon (Jimmer) in a bad light?

When I was in high school, my next door neighbor had an extra ticket and asked me if I wanted to watch a college basketball game with him (I mowed his lawn). I saw Maravich play as a junior. I think he scored 48 that night, with that floppy hair and those saggy socks.

He passed behind his back and between his legs without looking at the man he was passing to and I'm not certain he missed a shot all night.

He'd steal the ball, dribble behind his own back, and flip a bounce pass between his legs to the trailing man without looking.

He did it with such joy and ease and there didn't seem to be any cockiness to what he was doing.

There was never a Maravich before Maravich and I've never seen once since him.

A little Maravich? Don't make me laugh.

Maravich was the greatest ever, too bad he never had any talent around him in the NBA.

And did I mention he drained shots, nothing but net, from 10’-15’ behind what’s now the three-point line? I’m getting an adrenaline rush just thinking about that night. Still the career scoring leader in the NCAA - and he played in the era when freshmen weren’t allowed to play varsity. He did it in three years.

And he did it all with a missing left coronary artery, the doctors who performed the autopsy said it was a miracle he even made it to 40, sad.

“did you post it only because you thought it put a Mormon (Jimmer) in a bad light?”

Ding ding ding! We have a winner. Check out his posting history. This isn't even his first post on the BYU loss.

Jimmer is college basketball’s Tim Tebow. And they’re doing the same thing to him as they did to Tebow.

If the 3-pt line woud have been in effect for Maravich and if he could have played as a freshman, his college scoring records would have been out of this universe even more.
