The CBS Evening News anchor is very likely to leave in June and Scott Pelley is a top contender to replace her but CBS is looking both within and outside the network, Howard Kurtz reports.
The search is on for Katie Courics successor.
The new CBS News chairman, Jeff Fager, is looking at candidates both within and outside the network, insiders say.
One strong contender if Couric vacates the anchor chair in early June, as now seems almost certain, is veteran newsman Scott Pelley. The 60 Minutes correspondent has long been a favorite of Fager, who doubles as the shows executive producer. But with Fager taking a methodical approach to his first major decision, Pelley is not a lock. A few short weeks ago, the expectation in the Couric campafter discussions with top CBS managementwas that she would sign a new deal to stay in the anchors job through the 2012 elections as she figured out the next phase of her career. But the thinking on both sides has now changed as Couric has aggressively tested the watersand found substantial interest in her services.

I like Lester. He’s a flaming liberal, but he’s got a great delivery and a very personable style.
Never understood why NBC never moved him up.
Money well worth wasted.
He's horrible. I think, but am not positive, that he was the reporter who was involved in that 60 Minutes story that used the phony footage of oil waste in the Amazon, that was part of an expose (politically motivated 60 Minutes hit piece) on the logging and drilling business in that part of South America.
Maybe Fox news can let there correspondant Sarah Palin interview Miss prissy pants
Anyone remember the smug CBS execs when she was given the job and when they continued to “stand behind her”?
Someone should ask them what it’s like to waste a few years of your life.
I’ll bet she’s sorry she ever left The Today Show. She was Miss Wonderful there and nobody cared what she did because nobody watched. The show got passable ratings because it was background filler noise at hotels, coffee shops, and airports. Millions of dollars and you’re off work by 11:00 AM every day, with the exception of a cocktail party here or there, piece of cake. I’ll bet she’s sure wishing for the good ole days now.
Hey, I need to bust out that logic next time I’m up for review at my company. “Boss, it’s not that I did something to lose the company $3 million. With me doing what I was doing, we would’ve lost $15-$20 million!”
I like Lester Holt too.........he should be an anchor.
