Question - does drug use affect quality of work?

School I use to work for hired a contractor (lowest bidder, of course) to replace all light fixtures in the entire district with “ultra high-efficiency florescent” fixtures. Well - that summer, while the crew was “on site”, I was on campus one evening about 7PM and found this crew all gathered up in the high school gymnasium all getting stoked up on pot.

Imagine the “surprise” when all those “great” lights installed began failing within months of the crew leaving. EVerything from fixtures that had been basically torn up to install them, to wiring that was done completely wrong... It was a nightmare for the maintenance department. When the school tried to hold the contractor responsible - they couldn’t be found. Again - imagine that.

Did the pot have anything to do with it?.... You tell me.

Big difference between smoking pot on the job and off, no? Was a drug test necessary to assess the situation you describe, or was on the job behavior all you needed? A lit joint in somebody's hand while on the job tells you a whole lot more about their worth as a worker than metoblites in their urine, that may be six weeks old, doesn't it?

If that same crew had instead shared their joint the previous Friday at home, do you think pot would have had anything to do with the poor work any more than if they had shared a few beers?.... You tell me.

And since the contracting firm couldn't be located after the job was done, do you suppose there was more at work effecting the quality of their workers than pot?
