bang! ( or BOOM!, S%@$! in this case)

My brother shoots a lot of .223. Just called him to let him know about this. Thanks for the post.
LOL! Sorta weirded him out that I called him about it, but he's going after pigs in the morning, and carries the .223. An accident would slow down the flow of porcine goodness my direction. ;) Well, that, and I care about my brother.

So, if you buy Winchester 5.56mm ammo that costs somewhere near $16 retail cost for a box of 20 rounds, check the serial numbers before use.
Everyone shooting 5.56mm ammo that costs only $5.75 a box of 20 rounds -- namely everyone who doesn't light cigars with $100 bills -- you're probably in the clear.

Good info. I believe I have a few boxes of Winchester .223 I bought at Sports Authority.

Yep. I'm going to go pick up a couple of commercial 25 pounders tomorrow morning from a friend (trade for labor). BBQed piglet is on the menu for Sunday lunch (and most of the rest of the week).
But I do like me some ferals for sausage.

Winchester recently issued an important product safety notice, recalling certain lots of Winchester 64gr Power-Point .223 Rem ammo. According to The Firearm Blog, catastrophic failures destroyed a number of law enforcement AR15 type rifles. That Blog cited LEO agency notices describing guns that suffered cracked uppers and bowed lowers after firing Winchesters 64gr Power-Point .223 Rem ammo. Rifles built by three different manufacturers (Colt, Bushmaster, and Stag Arms), all sustained similar damage.

Wow... that must be some seriously wrong powder... to go ~that~ wrong. I wonder if somehow there might have been a mixup with faster pistol powder (like Win 231) or something.

There's some recalled Remington .223 62gr match ammo listed there as well.

Am I right in assuming that the recall is all for some quite recently produced ammo? All of my “stockpile” boxes are well over a year or two old. And... not of these described loads.

It seems to be a fairly recent issue. I doubt if that ammo was sitting around in some warehouse for too long, but 64 gr is not as common as 55 gr or 62 gr either.

The Winchester Ranger ammo is more commonly sold to law enforcement. You don’t see it in Walmart or the typical sporting goods store.

Yah. I don’t have any of the “Ranger” ammo. And no 64 grain. My bulk ammo is all 55 or 62. A few boxes of Remington, but mostly Lake City.

Would having the civilian product numbers help?
