Yes the vented it, and it was in all the papers. But then at the "end" of the event, the government came and "scanned" all the habitants of the area. They then passed out a niffty frame-able certificate to put on the wall. Really.
My wife and her X hubby #1 showed them to the reporter from the WSJ who interviewed them today here. You can probably see the pics and interview tomorrow or Friday on WST online.
But yes they DID vent it to the air. Of course that was at "safe levels".
My wife is very pragmatic and does NOT believe nuclear power should not be used. It should be, but managed better and the public told the truth.. always and fully. That does not seem to be the case in Japan right now. Nor was the case with TMI.
For the government studies, fed and state, they did not interview her or her hubby, or the family that lived a couple of hundred feet closer. Obviously a selective interview to get a selected result.

Thanks for the reply. I was very aware of TMI at the time. I just could not remember if there was a record of contaminated air/water being vented into the atmosphere from the plant.
