This year was actually a good year for movies, as I’ve written repeatedly. The King’s Speech was great; so was Toy Story 3; Inception may go down as one of the most creative films of all time. The Fighter was excellent as well.

Then there were the overrated films. Black Swan was atrociously awful, another Aronofsky masterpiece of self-aggrandizing bullcrap. The Kids Are All Right was a TV movie masquerading as a prestige film because it was about lesbians. True Grit was a remake.

Yes. That’s a look at the Coens’ “secret sauce.” And the conversation between the guy who’s protecting his found money and the border guard was good too. I’d recommend the movie to anyone who enjoys “movie moments” and tell people looking for satisfying entertainment to skip it.

I loved the Godfather.

But the rest of your list is right on, especially Pulp Fiction, Raging Bull, Apocalypse Now, Fargo, and Taxi Driver—all overrated.

I never saw Tootsie and have no interest in seeing it.

And I never saw Last Tango in Paris, and I don’t think I ever will either.

I agree with most of this except “The Matrix”. That was a very cool movie-the sequels, not so much.

Titantic was a waste of time. Morons were so infatuated (teenage girls) that if you told someone the ship sank they’d get angry with you for “ruining the ending”.

“From Dusk Till Dawn” was a Robert Rodriguez movie. Tarantino was an actor in it. He did direct a scene in Rodriguez’ “Sin City” though.

Little Miss Sunshine was a typical left wing template. Quirky family, dysfunctional, old guy, gay guy, etc.

Ahh, a fellow foreign flick fan. Agree on Infernal Affairs trilogy and Girl with the Dragon Tattoo trilogy. Judging by those picks and your being a GSP fan, I would have to recommend the South Korean vengeance trilogy-”Oldboy”, “Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance”, and “Sympathy for Lady Vengeance”.

Joe Versus the Volcano, perhaps Tom Hanks greatest triumph and surely a movie that embodies the brilliance of Hollywood.

Inglorius Basterds.

Now there’s a movie I’d put on the overrated list. Tarantino gets all manner of praise heaped upon him for his brilliant dialogue. That’s actually the number one problem in his most of his movies. It’s not great, it’s too damn diffuse and plentiful.

I was under the impression Tarantino also wrote some of ‘Dusk till Dawn’.

Either way - that was a cool movie - a 2-for (kidnap/robber movie with a vampire movie - what’s not to love....:)

Here is a movie I’ve seen recomended several times on FR and I will add a recomendation myself for those who have missed it.

SOPHIE SCHOLL-THE FINAL DAYS

If you haven’t seen Sophie Scholl-The Final Days, you have not seen one of the best foreign language movies of all time. And It made my top 10 list of most captivating movies of all time, meaning it is one of those movies that stick with you long after you watch it. And watching it makes you want to learn more about the real characters and the White Rose the Nazi resistance movement.

Sean Penn was in The Game and Mystic River. Both very, very good films. I can’t stand him, but he was really good in Mystic River.

The book and film are propagandistic, insufferable, written and made when Stalin was slaughtering millions.

Love Legends of the Fall. Julia Ormond deserved an Oscar for that movie. Brad Pitt was not that good in it, but the other two sons were great. Seen it about 10 times and I still love it.

Shawshank Redemption definitely on my favorite lists. Like the “Harry Dean Stanton Rule”, if a movie is on TV and I watch it, even if it’s in the middle or end when I tune in, it’s a classic. (Even if I OWN the DVD). Godfather, Pulp Fiction, definite YES. Over rated: Philadelphia. I know Demme wanted to shed his “anti-gay” (Silence of the Lambs) image in PC Hollywood, but I felt NO sympathy or even cared for the Tom Hanks character. It was spoon-fed pro-gay propaganda.

Hate Sean Penn as a person, but he is a fine actor. Mystic River tears my heart out when he finds out about his daughter.

I liked Mystic River as well. I just didn’t understand why they waited until the last minute to inform us that Sean Penn’s character’s wife was a Lady MacBeth. I haven’t gotten around to reading the book, but I have a hard time believing a novelist would wait until the last pages to inform us of that.
