"The Big Broadcast is a Sunday night tradition for families throughout the WAMU listening area. Each week, Big Broadcast host Ed Walker offers listeners priceless recordings of popular radio programs from the '30s, '40s and '50s. Priceless, especially, for a man whose first sentence as a child was, 'Turn the radio on.' "

6/21/59 "The Life At Steak Matter" Matter #644 Bob Bailey, Virginia Gregg (telephone operator), Jean Tatum (nurse), Howard McNear (Alvin Peabody Cartwright), Forrest Lewis (man on Malibu pier), Joseph Kearns (Jonathan Peoples), Paul Dubov (Bill Ferguson) ; Writer/Producer/Director - Jack Johnstone ; Announcer - Dan Cubberly ; Expense Account Total = "forget it" ; "One of my oldest and wildest friends, in one of my rarest and wildest adventures." A telephone operator calls Johnny to complete a call by Bill Ferguson of Continental Insurance and Trust, Hartford. Ferguson catches Johnny who is still in Los Angeles following his work in Morro Bay on "The Big H Matter". Alvin Peabody Cartwright the wealthy, elderly, absent-minded, friend of Johnny's from Lakewood, north of Hartford, also has a place at 10321 N. Roxbury Drive, Beverly Hills, California. He invites Johnny over to his place. When Dollar gets there Jonathan Peoples tells him that he fears that Cartwright is dead, because he saw two strange men carrying a trunk away that was dripping blood. Dollar gets knocked out by a kid chasing a hula hoop, and wakes up to a blonde nurse in the hospital. Johnny and Peoples take off to the Malibu Pier where a man tells him that two men went out to Cartwright's yacht. On the pier they see blood. Peoples is sure that the two men have murdered Cartwright. Commandeering a speed boat, Dollar and Peoples track the culprits to Cartwright's 75 foot yacht, the Alpecar (ALvin PEabody CARtwright), on the high seas. Cartwright is alive. He had called Ferguson to get in touch with Dollar because he wanted to treat him to a trip on the sea in his yacht, but forgot and left without Dollar, as well as the trunk of tenderloin steaks that his new butler and cook, Gerald and Harold, had to return home to get. This sounds like fun even though I’m getting ready for bed at 8pm EST for another week of law school, maybe I can listen a little. Can you put me on your ping list?

I don’t like Daylight Saving time—”losing” an hour, I mean. Can we please just split the difference by half an hour, and leave it alone?!

There’s sympathy for the young kid already on a wrong path. A hungry kid is a sympathetic figure.

I like the ending. It leaves you with hope that the kid went right in the end.
I was just saying there’s the subtlety of a storyline that evokes sympathy for a “bad guy” who is in need. It makes it look like there are some “good” reasons to steal.

Just ok. Some nice Irish Bing Crosby tunes though. The JD had a repeat of a storyline which must have been a formula they were working with.
