Robert Vaughan in real life was a real lefty too.

What is intresting is Clint and Steve played San Fran detectives constantly fighting a liberal police dept etc etc. I think some film makers were trying to show Calif - post Manson was going down the tubes. Sadly it kept going.

Don’t get me wrong, I love Bogey....but like most of hollyweird, he was a LEFTY and not a closet lefty either...

So was Reagan in those days.....but Bogart like Reagan saw the light and became VERY ProAmerican and anticommunist.

I never thought of that! Rather compelling. I LOVE the Dirty Harry series (except for the one with Sondra Locke ... what was Clint thinking?). But as a female, I never found Eastwood at all attractive except for his looks UNTIL the movie "In the Line of Fire." For the first time ever, Eastwood's character showed really endearing qualities in personality, a reason (beyond good looks) for any red-blooded female to fall in love with him! *sigh*

And it took one of my favorite actresses, Rene Russo, to bring it out in him.

Well, his being a liberal explains why he was always so good at playing elitist, corrupt asshats! ;^)

I still love that movie too - in the line of fire. Great acting, especially from malkovich, and Rene and Clint definitely had sparks. It was filmed where I was working at the time so that was cool too.

She signed things she shouldn't have and gave speeches for some questionable groups, but was she really that dedicated? I suspect she just wanted to be fashionable and was just following the herd. She was probably more typical of Hollywood "progressive" circles in her day than someone who stood out politically.

It is funny that she would have gotten a reputation for being a flinty individualist who went her own way when she was just following the mob. And funny too that she'd been dating Howard Hughes during the Depression when millions were unemployed.

I never knew that about him. He was a much different person than I had thought.

More trivia; Bogart was from a well to do family. Also, his mother was an artist. She was commissioned to paint the Gerber baby and used baby Humphrey as a mode.

Man, that MUST have been cool! Yes, Malkovich -- I've heard that he leans to the right -- is absolutly over the top in acting skill in that movie. We just watched it again (for the umpteenth time) a few nights ago, and both my husband and I marveled at how great John Malkovich is in the part.

Really, I get so tired of the conventional "wisdom" (an oxymoron most of the time, as now) that the only great actors came from long ago. That is such hooey -- our era has many wonderful actors.
