BTW, ignore the expiration date. Potassium and Iodine are both pretty reactive elements, and as long as the bottle is sealed, it won’t break down.
Are you near the reactor? Are you in Japan?
You said it so well, all these arm chair freepers saying relax and making excuses doesn’t suprise me, theres always a huge portion of folks that back such things such as BP during the gulf crisis and so on, it’s almost as if it’s thier duty to line up and drink radio active water becasue the liberals hate nuclear power. Good to hear another reasonable voice out there.

“Remember the Boy Scout motto: BE PREPARED!!”
Sure, but there is a serious difference between being prepared and being a paranoid drama queen.
A nuke plant in Japan blowing its lid will have no affect on someone here.
Listen, twit.
If I had come to you two days ago and said one of the 5 biggest earthquakes ever recorded was about to happen in Japan, that tens of thousands could be killed, that they would lose control of five nuclear reactors that would start exploding, then you probably could have rightly told me to put down the pipe.
But just about everything that COULD go wrong HAS GONE WRONG.
So if you want to sit there with your head up your ass that’s fine. I have few recommendations for you that do not have the word “bite” in them!
I don't know what makes you so stupid, but it really works. Grow up.
Right...keep posting what the government says about iodine. We need iodine to LIVE; no one has allergies to it. Iodine is a powerful detox and the poisons it purges cause the symptoms.

This guy is an expert on iodine. Radioactive iodine is toxic. Inorganic non radioactive iodine/iodine is what we depend on to live. If you read this he talks about 3 people getting allergies out of 3k and were treated and all but one could continue to take iodine. I study iodine ALOT; there is further evidence that the skin rashes these people experienced are bromine detox symptoms since our society is LOADED with bromine and iodine purges it. People need to take the correct kind of iodine which is iodine/iodide to live and we’re not getting it in the US.

Here’s alittle more information; I really don’t mean to come across abrupt as I can see where there would be confusion and I’ve done a huge amount of DD on iodine/iodide. For several years, up to 1948, we supplemented baked goods with iodine. Then they switched it to bromine, which is considered a toxic halide that mimics iodine. In other words it absorbs like iodine onto the receptors but has no good qualities. When you take any amount of ‘good iodine, ie not radioactive, you can and most likely will, have some adverse affects that are known as bromine detox. This is sometimes confused with an allergy but it’s the effect of the strong detox affect of the iodine.

How Safe is Iodine Supplementation?
Very Safe. Iodine is the only trace element that can be ingested safely in amounts up to 100,000 times the RDA. For example, potassium iodide has been prescribed safely to large numbers pulmonary (COPD) patients in amounts of up to 6 grams per day for several years. This potassium iodide is a well known treatment for COPD which helps mobilize lung secretions. (18)

The FDA has officially stated that Iodine supplementation is safe and actually recommends 165 mg of Iodine for adults in case of Radiation Emergency to protect the population from thyroid cancer. (17) Iodine allergy is a misnomer since this name applies to allergy to iodinated radiographic contrast agents, and not to elemental iodine which is quite different. (10) Elemental Iodine is an essential mineral and required for health. Deficiency of Iodine in the developing embryo causes cretinism, and deficiency in the developing child causes goiter.

Thanks! I was just wondering about that last night if supplements would be okay for my wife, who had a reaction to the iodine dye contrast one time in the hospital. After reading your post though, LOTS of foods have it and she doesn’t react, so “duh” on my part!
Thanks again for the information.
Typical of you not answering the question asked three times.
ARE YOU IN JAPAN?
If yes then good question if not then you are being a hypochondriac douche bag.
Finally, if you really cared about your kids you would ask their doctor not us FReepers.
What are we to do?
Three things. The first is simple enough, and you've already done it: lay in a supply long before they're needed. You've done that, you're not dependent on any governmental source or local supply, so you have far less to be worried about than most folks, who've made no preparations at all. Third level: the specifice that relate to you and those with you. Iodine 103 specific dosage and treatment prophylaxis by age group here. Naturaly, supplies are running low or completely out as panic buying depletes current stocks [info *here*] That'll be an eventual consideration for you when your current supply hits its expiration date, but things may be have returned to a semblance or normalcy by then. Or they may not have.
So far as WHEN to take them: there's very, very little need for concern about radiation effects in the US yet, except for alarmists looking for a way to profit from concerns ranging from hand-wringing anxiety to outright panic. You can plug into a solid network of informed folks *here*, many with industry or military backgrounds- the military has maintained a cadre of trained folks in the radiological monitoring field since the first atomic events at Hiroshima and Nagasaki in the summer of 1945. Known as NBC or ABC [now CBRNE, [pronounced *sea-burn*] teams, they're the commander's source of information and expertise down to the battalion level.
Beyond that? Take the radiological monitoring course from your local Emergency Preparedness office, and if it's not immediately available, you can take the FEMA correspondence cource *here,* and
