I don’t think it’s for ashes or trash because you want to see that, so the lid wouldn’t have a window

I’m with you on that. The rod out the back may have gone into a hole on a post near the wheel.

Maybe a pocket watch presentation box missing the liner and the gilding? This one is angled.

Well that is a good idea. I was thinking presentation bod, but of what.
Cigarette box bothered me because I don’t know if you want cigarettes exposed to light.

“Cigarette box bothered me because I dont know if you want cigarettes exposed to light.”
Keep in mind the time frame of the article. I doubt light exposure was a major factor back then, especially if it was kept on a fireplace mantel or away from a window.

Some cigarette boxes were crystal or all glass. I don’t think light exposure was really an issue so much as having a lid to keep air out.

The tin strikes me as not original. The box is too ornate and the tin isn’t. I suspect the sides were originally glass.
Presentation or viewing. If it’s deco it’s early, rather organic as far as the decoration, leaning more toward art noveau.
Is the protuberance on the front one of the “handles” you referenced?

Watch, Chumley will wind up owning the pawn shop one day, the boy is thinking all the time :^)

way back when, people rolled their own cigaretts. I was thinking a home made jewelry box, but others have better ideas.
Today I roll my own and would use it for a cigarette box. Roll sometimes a carton at a time...while watching TV. As a child my father taught me to roll his cigarettes for him, not as good a the machines you get today...also how to fill a pipe. That is an art, too loose and it draws to fast , too tight and it does not draw at all.. He's been gone since 1988 and I still miss him...:O)
