Phil Collins Retires For Good From Music, Cites Injuries and Hearing Loss

PHIL Collins has quit music for good after developing hearing problems, a dislocated vertebra and nerve damage in his hands from his 40-year career playing drums.

The Easy Lover hitmaker also thinks people are sick of him and his music.

“It’s a good time to stop,” said the star, who has sold more than 150 million records.

“I look at the MTV Music Awards and I think: ‘I can’t be in the same business as this’.

“I don’t really belong to that world and I don’t think anyone’s going to miss me. I’m much happier just to write myself out of the script entirely.

“I’m not worried about not being able to play the drums again, I’m more worried about being able to cut a loaf of bread safely or building things for my kids.”

Collins — who is in a relationship with newsreader Dana Tyler and has been married three times, to Andrea Bertorelli, Jill Taverman and Orianne Cevey — recently insisted he has no plans to ever tie the knot again.

“She’s a very sweet girl, sweet lady but I’m not going to get married again,” he said. “I think I’m better off on my own.”

I’ve been sick of him since 1986. Glad to see he finally caught up.

But seriously...he hasn’t recorded anything worse diddly squat since “Take Me Home”.

McBurnie in San Diego built the cars. I went down there and I almost bought one, then I talked to a guy who actually did build one.

The kit was a bear to assemble, and most of the time you had to take the car back to McBurnie to align the doors.

Now that I'm looking back through my old tired eyes, I should have said WTF (Winning The Future) and the taken the plunge.

Your list is pretty good.

My list is ‘Blood On The Rooftops’, ‘Taking It All Too Hard’, ‘In Too Deep’, ‘Throwing It All Away’, ‘All in a Mouse’s Night’, ‘Illegal Alien’, ‘Take Me Home’, ‘Just A Job To Do’, ‘Long Long Way To Go’, and ‘That’s All’.

Two almost completely different lists. It just goes to show how much great music Phil (and Genesis) made.

FRegards,
LH

Most Genesis purists do. I’ve heard other Collins versions and they don’t measure up to the original, mostly because Steve Hackett wasn’t there. His guitar makes the Seconds Out version almost as much as Collins’ vocals. My only minor quibble with the original is that it sounds slightly rushed in comparison.

I love that there are two, very different, completely amazing versions of it out there. There will never be another piece of contemporary music like that again. We’re fortunate to be able to appreciate it.

Even with the market crashing and oil going through the roof, still some good news today.

Of all the "new" Genesis, "Domino" and "Driving the Last Spike" (both epics) are my favorites.

I like:
(in no particular order)
1. Against All Odds
2. In The Air Tonight
3. I Don’t Care Anymore
4. I Missed Again
5. Inside Out
6. Another Day in Paradise
7. Invisible Touch

Imho, music isn’t music anymore, it’s just so much packaged crap.

Phil did a lot of great music.

I like the Land of Confusion video.

He will be back.

I agree that today’s music isn’t that good. Then again, I seem to like or identify with things not in my age bracket.

Phil is one of my favorites. I knew his recent shoulder and arm surgeries were going to be difficult to overcome. I hope he is content and satisfied at the great music he has given to us to enjoy - he certainly should be. Thanks for all the great music Phil! Cue me up some Abacab.

Good one.

I also like his songs from the Tarzan soundtrack. Two Worlds, You'll Be In My Heart, & Son of Man are all outstanding songs.

I need to stop by B&N tomorrow to see if they have any of his CD's. My sister gave me a gift card for my birthday last month, & it is burning a hole in my wallet. ;-)

I love Genesis up to and including “And Then There Were Three”. Not much after that.

I remember the Miami Vice episode with Bruce McGill as a former cop haunted by a missing drug dealer. At the end of the episode, as Crockett and Tubbs discover that McGill's character helped kill the missing drug dealer 5 years earlier and hide him behind the wall of an apartment, Dire Strait's Brothers In Arms is eerily playing in the background.
