Hot shot: Meet Regis, 19-year-old big game huntress who's America's deadliest teen
Daily Mail ^ | 3rd March 2011 | Jeff Maysh

Posted on 03/03/2011 10:37:35 PM PST by george76

She's studying at a college in Florida, and like any typical American teenager she loves shopping and hanging out with her friends. But at weekends she is one of the deadliest shots in the brush.

Regis Giles, 19, is one of America's hottest hunters - and she's taking the big game world by storm.

She's killed buffalo, wild boar, deer and a bear in her hunting career, which began when she was aged just nine.

And she's already drawing parallels to Sarah Palin, America's most famous gun-toting wilderness-loving woman.

Miss Giles is a lifetime member of the NRA. She was hunting well before Mrs Palin took America by storm during the 2008 general election. But she is as staunch a promoter of American blood sport as the former Alaska governor is.

Diane Danielson of the NRA’s Women On Target programme explains that the ‘Palin effect’ has increased female membership 20 per cent, with the NRA teaching 10,000 new women a year to shoot, and making more girls want to take up hunting, like Regis.

‘Firearm manufacturers are gearing their products towards women. They’re scaling down stocks, and shortening trigger pull lengths for our shorter fingers,' Ms Danielson said.

I have friends who are anti-hunting,’ she said solemnly. ‘I don’t tend to argue with them, they’re just not well informed.

'Hunters like me actually help the wildlife. Taxes on our weapons and equipment go directly to state conservation programmes, and last year $294 million was raised by hunters.’

The meat from the giant bison Miss Giles is seen posing with is enough to feed a man for 18 months. She donated her kill to a local homeless shelter, where the meat fed the needy.

Did she shoot it and lop the skull cap off for a trophy and leave the rest to rot?

No?

Then she's ok in my book. It's not the why, it's the waste that gives me a moral qualm. In the "kill it and grill it" equation, no where does it state that the person doing the killin' has to do the grillin' as well.

You’re correct, but if you look at the double barrel she is pictured with, it is certainly not a .410

My statement was too general and I did not even think about a .410 when I wrote it. A .410 is very close to the size of a .45 caliber bullet too.

In many places, if she did, that would be illegal. [Let's forget for the moment it is unethical];D

Having been raised in the *you-hook-’em-you-cook-’em* philosophy, it goes against my grain. Animals are taken for food, pelts and there was reverence for the animal who was providing sustenance for the family. Less for *sport* and more for how their existence is part of the circle of life. That’s how we were raised.

Does this mean we should eschew Burger King, KFC, and other restaurants since we didn't do our own killing?

Like I said, she wasn't just taking trophies and doing nothing with the harvested animal.

It's just my opinion, please don't take offense.

No offense taken. Frankly, I really don’t care what she does. It reminds me of the little girl who insists on playing on the boys football team. Meh. Doing stuff for bragging rights, doesn’t sit well with me....moral absolutes and all that rot. She can be what ever kind of hunter she wants to be. Carry on. Sorry to judge her.

The difference between a buffalo and a bison is that you can't wash your face in a buffalo.

I'll be here all week. Try the spotted owl.

I was raised in that tradition, too. However, many moons ago in a particularly tough year a few of us worked together to make sure we and others besides us had meat. Whenever someone got a kill, all those involved got some, and kids were kept fed through a particularly harsh winter.

I have no problem with giving away meat you cannot use to those who can (or even giving away meat you can use to those who need it more), any more than I have trouble with an elephant hunter giving the carcass to the nearest village.

Having some and feeding others is a strong part of hunting tradition, too, and heralds from earlier days of civilization.

I have found animals shot and left to lay (small herd of pronghorns), or shot, butchered for the prime cuts on the spot and the rest left to rot (8 whitetail with the backstraps and hindquarters gone), and in a year when I knew of a dozen families who would have been happy to have the meat that was left to rot.

Now, THAT I have a real problem with.

Yeah.... I don’t think so.

I have hunted plenty and fished even more.

On the game side if someone else can use the meat I always let them have it and took a little for myself.

Of course, I never shot anything I wasn’t going to eat or give to someone who would.

Besides, the girl had to gut the thing before she hauled it out.

On the fishing side, I generally toss em back, unless they are big enough to make want to keep them or I just had a hankering for fish that day.

But, most of the time, even if they were big, I just release them.

I can’t stand touching fish even if though I have mastered the technique of filleting them.

Yes. I think you are correct and you get no argument from me.

Around here, places/permissions to hunt are so closely coveted and protected/appreciated, if an ethical hunter came across a carcass they would personally try to find out who was responsible and take it upon themselves to discipline the culprit.
