“Patting” a strange dog on the head is dominance behavior in dog body language.

You should *always* pet a strange dog -under- the jaw while maintaining a -parallel- body position to it.

It’s non-threatening/non-challenging physical communication with the dog.

[the *best* scenario is to not stare at a strange dog and wait for it to make a friendly overture, first]

Most Dobermanns are smarter than their owners.
