Hey Baby Boomers, grow up!
NY Post ^ | February 26, 2011 | TRACEY JACKSON

Baby Boomers are having a hard time. Not just with the economy, or the health issues that crop up in your 50s and 60s, or even getting caught between taking care of our aging parents and unemployed kids.

No, I’m talking about the fact that many Boomers, of which I am one, do not want to grow up.

Those of us born in the Baby Boomer period, between 1946 and 1964, range in age from 47 to 65. We are either on the young side of old, or we’re just a hop, skip and hopefully not a fall into 70.

I don’t know that we mind growing up, but many of us don’t want to grow old. But certain Boomer minds have somehow merged the two. In order not to grow old, they have taken the position that they will simply not grow up.

You see it in the absurd notion put forward by journalists and advertisers — “50 is the new 30.” “60 is the new 40.” We buck each other up by dressing and behaving like it’s true, as though if we repeat it enough we will actually make it so.

And because we are Boomers and have been at the forefront of so many innovations, from rock ’n’ roll to the computer, some have this misguided impulse to act hip. Have you ever seen so many 50-year-olds dressed like teenagers? In my grandfather’s and even my father’s era, grown men did not wear sneakers, shorts, T-shirts and caps unless they were actually involved in an athletic activity. Grown men did not go to work looking like they were headed for sleep-away camp.

My grandfather dressed in slacks and a shirt and sensible shoes and a suit every day for work.

Oh, I dunno. Here in Florida I’ve grown up a bit. Instead of a t-shirt, cut offs, flip flops and a cap I now wear assorted fishing shorts and shirts, Sperry Top Siders and a cap.

Boomers are the most spoiled disgusting generation in history. They are so egotistical. I am even saying this knowing my parents are Boomers (barely) and my brother and sister and I are Generation X which acts more mature than the Boomers. It sure seems that it is all about ME ME ME with regards to the Boomers. There is NO WAY on Earth that you can dispute me with this post.

What’s wrong with a t shirt and a velour hoody? This guy needs to geta_life.

You do realize that you’re almost certainly saying that about a large majority of people on this website, right?

Well unless they are guilty of the things that I said than they have nothing to worry about. I am talking about them as a whole and not FREEPERS who are not typical boomers by any means....my parents aren’t either but as a whole Boomers did more damage to the United States than any other generation could even dream about.

Well I am a boomer! I don’t particularly see what dressing up has to do with growing up. I still wear the same brand of Jeans as I did when I was 15 (not the same size).

I was married at 20 (and still am), sacrificed for my kids, have done volunteer work as well as worked constantly since I was 17. Renovated a few houses during this time as well. In fact I have had very little time for me in the past 30 years.

I respect my elders and those who fought for our freedom. I love God and my country.

I seriously don’t know that I could have done more to ‘grow up’ and I know plenty of others in the same boat. So I think the initial statement is exaggerated even if true for some of my generation.

Oh and BTW I know I won’t get to retire and move to sunny climes like the generation that preceeded me and I am not going to whine about it either as it is probably something my country can’t afford.

So if I want to continue to wear Levi’s until I am 75 and sneakers until I turn up my toes in them then I reckon that is my business and no-one elses.

Cheers

Mel

Older generations tended to wear into old age what they wore as young adults. Same thing with hair styles. I don’t see baby boomers as being much different.

What does the writer think, that older generations wore t-shirts and running shoes until they turned 50, then they suddenly grew more dignified?

Oh so true. Calling our generation the baby boomers is the nicest thing you could say about us. I don't wanna sound all self-loathing... but, when the boomer generation has finally moved on the world will be a better place. Think about the great American leaders from the boomer generation. They are? Think about all the self-absorbed progressive narcissists from our generation. With our parting gift... Barack Hussein Obama II.

Don't get me wrong. Gen X? It would be great if we could skip them entirely.

The boomers are being blamed for all the countries ills from 1960 to the current day.

Thats amazing, especially when you consider that over half the boomers such as myself fought against everything the parasites in Washinton have done over the course of our lives.

You would be better off blaming the entitlement class or the blacks who vote 9 to 1 for the democrats as a group.. but the boomers are probally responsible for that as well.

I wear shorts and a T shirt everyday in the summer. I’d wear my jeans, but I can’t get into them right now.

For years and years, we Floridians have been exposed to retirees who foolishly don’t act or dress their age, which is why the article caught my attention.

As a generation, probably.

But some of us are kind, decent, and thoughtful individuals who would take umbrage at your statement.

I'm a boomer and have said for many years we are the generation that pushed us over the edge with social issues. The worst thing we ever did was when we let women take off their bras. Okay.....that was a joke. Please don't look for my address and show up protesting. :)

Come down here to FL and take a stroll on any beach or through any seaside town. Some of the sights you’ll see will turn your stomach.

Same here, especially the tired mid-lifers trying to pick chicks. Hilarious!

I was trying to keep the comments light before the GenXers started trashing everyone over 45.
