There is accumulating evidence that electronic fences tend to make dogs more territorially defensive because they’re restrained but others can trespass onto the dogs territory at will. This causes hyper-vigilance bordering on paranoia.

The reason I know this is my neighbor had to put down what had been a really sweet puppy that became practically a paranoid neurotic attack dog, and the only thing anyone could see for this was the electronic fence.

I have a Golden Retriever. He is very protective of his territory (our backyard) and will ferociously howl at anyone who approaches the fence. Yet, he is a sweetheart while on a leash.

I mention this because an unscrupulous breeder of Goldens had a prize-winning dog who was unpredictable and would attack though unprovoked. Because this dog was a champion, purely on looks, the dogs genes have dispersed through the breed. You must be careful when purchasing a Golden Retriever now, and check out the parents for unstable behavior.

Most definitely. Not enough variety in the lineage around here. Some of the Goldens look more like Irish Setters, very slender frames and heads, not the usual friendly attitude and sturdy structure. Some dogs are simply insecure when the owner isn’t around and become aggressive to keep the adversary from knowing that they’re scared.

I can’t figure out why anyone would leave a popular breed unprotected from possible thievery. Nevertheless, the police may need an animal setting on a taser or something to try to avoid such incidents.

Golden Retrievers as a breed seem to be splitting into two branches, just like the English Springer Spaniels: into ‘bench bred’ (show dogs) and ‘field bred’ (gun dogs for hunting).

I own two gun dogs - an ESS bitch and a GR dog (yes, he is more lithe and athletic than what most consider a Golden Retriever, but he still has the personality and has a high prey drive).

I hope LEOs around the country get the pepper spray memo. I wonder why he didn’t use a less lethal option. I wasn’t there and don’t know this officer, but he obviously needs more training. To think a dog will stop just because one, a stranger no less, tells it to seems to indicate a person unused to dogs. Even if the man knew there was an electric fence, why should he trust it to keep the dog in? Plenty of questions and no answers.

I can’t presume to know what you should do if a dog looked as though it were going to attack you, but I would hope that whatever you do works out for the best.

He ordered the dog to stop? Seriously?

I am still filled with a sense of glee when I recall how I got a charging rottweiler to turn around so fast he stumbled; As he zipped towards me (not in a friendly way, either...head down, low to the ground, staring at my face) I threw my arms out to the side and started stomping towards him, shouting. He nearly did a summersault, he ran away so fast.

Of course his bimbo owner, who up until this point had been screeching “HE DOESN’T BITE!” was offended that I had scared her poor little baby.

The bottom line is the dog was in his OWN YARD.

All else is irrelevant.

I hope this cop has a good civil defense lawyer. This family should file a civil suit against him so big his grandchildren will be answering motions.

Oh, while we’re at it, howzabout posting HIS name so everyone in Georgia can know what worthless turds their municipal taxes pay for?

The word you’re looking for is COWARD.

George Patton should come back from the dead to slap these yellow-bellies around a bit.

Then this ignoramus with a badge has NO REASON to be on someone’s property.

Dogs defending their own property is what dogs do.
This JBT should be tarred and feathered.

Exactly.

My dog is on just such a fence. She has a 30' barrier around our entire property.

Shoot my dog while she's still on my property and no threat to you and I'll return fire. I don't care who you are.

“Shoot my dog while she’s still on my property and no threat to you and I’ll return fire”

I’m personally surprised that we don’t hear of this happening more often—cops getting return fire when they open fire on dogs on their owners’ property, I mean.

I guess the cops haven’t yet shot any dogs belonging to Freepers.

Well, dogs aren’t allowed to conceal-carry, so most of them are unarmed and therefore cannot return fire.

I bet the police would be less likely to pull a gun on someone who might be able to fire back.

In the latter, the dog has violated no law, and been executed for doing what it is supposed to do—bark at strangers and remain in its yard...Comparing the two is comparing apples and oranges.

The post I was replying to asked why postal employees and others can deliver mail and read meters without shooting dogs. I merely pointed out that they can and often do suspend their duties when they know a dog is present at a residence, police cannot do that.

I am a consummate animal lover and would never want an animal harmed unless it threatened a life and there was no other option, which is more than merely barking in its own yard. I believe the yard in this case had no visible fence, which would have alarmed anyone approaching.

Actually, that post made an observation; it did not ask a question.

It did not claim that those employees did not have the option, if they chose, of declining to perform their services unless the owner is home and/or the dog is restrained in some fashion.

It did point out that by the time those working in other professions are done doing their job, the family dog is still around whereas those pets shot and killed by cops are not.
