“Patterns arise in systems when they’re under some kind of stress, applied stress.”
When bacteria are subjected to a stress they express error prone DNA polymerase to copy their genome instead of the usual high fidelity DNA polymerase. It seems that the response is breaking down one “pattern” to give rise to a new “pattern”, through selection of the newly derived variations.

Pattern Language is the title of a book published on community and residential architecture some decades ago. I used many of the Pattern Language ideas when designing the house we built in 2002.
