Pugs are toy dogs and they’re all bred strictly for appearance and it doesn’t affect function because their function is simply being a companion.
But the smashed in face and the sometimes extreme German Shepherd does illustrate my beauty point. Is there any dog with extreme characteristics that is generally called beautiful? The trouble with extreme characteristics is that they produce disabilities and nobody claims disability is beautiful.
That said, the GSD in group did not strike me as a particularly extreme one.
Several of the toy dogs were bred out of larger versions of their breed which did have functions outside of companionship.
Many people I know would call German Shepherds beautiful dogs; this does not change the fact that those German Shepherd lines which are more concerned with producing show dogs have more dogs with sloped backs than those German Shepherd lines which are more concerned with preserving the dog’s functions.
Form does not always follow function.
