LAS VEGAS, - A Vermont grocery store worker was crowned the best grocery bagger in the United States at a Las Vegas faceoff with baggers from 20 other states.

Krystal Smith, 24, of Burlington, took home the $10,000 prize and the "Golden Grocery Bag" trophy Monday from the 2011 National Grocers Association Best Bagger Championship, presented by ConAgra Foods.

The baggers were rated on speed, style, attitude, appearance, bag-building technique and weight distribution. Smith finished bagging her assigned groceries in only 38 seconds during the final round.

Second-place finisher Jessica Lewis of Washington earned a $5,000 prize, while runners-up Andrew Hadlock of Utah, Matt Medley of Minnesota and Roland Mattox of Georgia each received $1,000.

"Each year, we hold this competition to shine a light on the baggers and their unending commitment to this industry," National Grocers Association President Peter Larkin said. "And year after year, from the state level to this national stage, they continue to embody the true values of the independent grocer."

It is about time that these uniquely skilled workers were recognized.

Now that I have done a little thinking about your interesting situation/makeover, have you gone for a second opinion?

Ooopsie....

I am so concern about your surgery I directed the following post to me rather than you. In that post I asked:

I’d like to try out in a competition like that. I DO USE BOTH HANDS when I’m in the bagging “zone”.

It’s something I developed in late adulthood, because as a high-schooler I got fired from a grocery store job for being a clerk who couldn’t ring in an order without two mistakes and a bagger who would hand 20 lb load bags to little old ladies. In other words, a complete doofus.

I remain, the grocers' nightmare...I ask for paper *IN* plastic. And will do so until they start *taxing* me. I like bagging... of course strangely, I like shoveling snow; nor ever had a rebate for having my own grocery bags

I usually use paper in plastic, but I also like the bring-your-own fabric bags since they can load up as much as two to three full paper bags. Weight is no problem for me. Only for the bag straps!

I also love shoveling snow. Not ice though! Breaking up ice is hard on the joints.

Aside from the fact that many of the eco-bags are made in 3rd world countries with child labor, have you seen the threads on how unsanitary they are?

Stay warm! 30* here...some of the snow/ice is melting.

You should have seen my girlfriend go Jihad on the Walmart manager when she got home and found a loaf of bread crushed under a gallon of milk.

She drove back to the store and raised hell. The manager walked to the bread aisle and gave her two loaves.
