FORT WORTH, Texas - A missing kinkajou suffering from frostbite to one paw has been reunited with its owner in Texas, sheriff's officials said.
A kinkajou is a small mammal related to the raccoon, and it is normally found in Central and South America, but this animal belonged to a little girl, said the Fort Worth (Texas) Star-Telegram.
The animal turned up in a Johnson County home after escaping from its owner, and apparently ran into another house to get out of the cold.
"At first they thought he might lose his foot to frostbite," said Detective Steve Shaw of the Johnson County Sheriff's Department. "But now it looks like it might just be a toe or two."
The animals don't normally make great pets, but having one isn't uncommon, said KXAS-TV, Dallas/Fort Worth.
The animals can be friendly, but can turn vicious and aggressive if they're scared.
Veterinarians caring for the animal feared it could lose a paw to frostbite, but later determined it might lose only a toe.
Being native to South and Central America, the kinkajou doesn't like cold temperatures, the report said.

Our neighbor in Costa Rica had one for a pet. It was like a cross between a cat and a monkey, with the worst of both combined into one.

Stay tuned for a follow up article on how the little girl had her face tore to pieces by this wild animal who should have never been turned into a pet. Wild animals are not pets. How fast people forgot about "Travis The Chimp". Someone needs to step in, remove this animal and take it to a zoo, he will eventually get freaked out and scared and go on a clawing and biting rampage.

It would've been a better story if it belonged to Kinky Friedman & The Texas Jewboys.
They even LOOK alike!

I once worked at a place that handled “exotic” mammals and reptiles. Never had a problem with Kinagous until one day one was sitting on a co-workers shoulder and decided to sink it's teeth into her neck. They have some serious canines. I would never have one as a pet, especially around kids.

Wild animals belong in the wild. No reason to have any wild creature as a pet. It ends badly for all concerned. Contact a local zoo or animal sanctuary and see if they have an ‘adoption’ program where someone can donate funds to a particular animal for it’s care. The professionals care for the animal and amateurs are kept at a distance from possibly fatal stupidity.

Kinkajous are nocturnal animals, hence the large eyes.
