Nearly a year of protests by a handful of animal rights activists hasn't stopped vendors at the Heart of the City Farmers' Market at United Nations Plaza from selling live poultry.
The activists say the fowl - chickens and game birds - are mistreated, pointing to the manner in which they are trucked in crates and given to customers in bags to take home.
The vendors say they have done nothing wrong and that activists have hurt their businesses, which provide a product some people desire.
The activists demonstrate nearly every day the market is open, recording video and handing out pamphlets in two languages to customers. They have lodged complaints with the district attorney, the city attorney, the Public Health Department, and Animal Care and Control.
The city has investigated the allegations but has not taken any disciplinary action, allowing vendors and the market - the only one in the city with live fowl - to continue operating as usual. Still, the activists aren't deterred.
Over the past month, they've sued the market for negligent supervision and one of its vendors, Raymond Young Poultry, alleging that its workers committed assault and human rights violations during confrontations with activists.
The activists' attorney, former Supervisor and mayoral candidate Matt Gonzalez, has challenged the district attorney's office for its refusal to prosecute the vendors and market for animal cruelty. He has also filed a claim with the city attorney to ensure police enforce permitted operating hours.
The efforts have frustrated the vendors and the market.
"The activists have gone to everyone - I don't know what else to do," said the market's manager, Christine Adams. She said Raymond Young "is legal - that is why they haven't kicked him out."

OH no, the poor chickens are put in cages or stuffed into bags for the customer to take home.
Where the chicken is killed in order to be cooked and eaten.
Then the protesters go to micky d’s and get a chicken sandwich.
No where in the article does it say what the protester organization is about. I guess they really love c**** though or they would not raise such a fuss.
So the LGBT brigade doesn’t like other people choking their own chickens?
Now there is some Hypocrisy.
Somebody described for me a major chicken operation farming operation. The farmers are all independent, but the meat company supplies the eggs, drugs, and (I think) the feed. The company harvests 12 million chickens a day. Each roosting pin contains 100,000 chickens. When the chickens reach an average size, a guy comes along with a vacuum and sucks the live chickens through several hundred feet of tube where they’re dumped into a tractor trailer. No cages, just 100,000 chickens in a tractor trailer. How does this compare with a live poultry market?
BTW, chickens have the same reasoning ability as a liberal voter.
