There are people who I only know from reading headlines of the tabloids while I wait to check out at the supermarket. Aside from that I have no idea who they are, except that they seem to be having a lot of trouble. I vaguely understand that they are famous in some parallel universe that I don't live in.

As the years go by I watch less and less network TV, I go to fewer and fewer movies, so there are whole generations of actors who have come and gone and I have no idea who they are aside from what I glean from my trips to the grocery store. So and so is breaking up with their latest spouse, whatsisname might be gay, somebody else has gained an awful lot of weight. I don't know what they do for a living except that they are in the entertainment business, but I swear if they sat down next to me on an airplane I'd have no idea who they were from Adam.

Actually, I rather like that. The older I get the more I value having an inner life that is at least partially shielded from the constant and pointless churnings of pop culture.

Not only a parallel universe I don't reside in, it's one I wouldn't touch with a 10 and a half foot pole...
