The "gay issue" is really quite a few issues, IMHO. One of them is privacy, which few conservatives would argue with. Another, however, is the co-option of homosexuality by social activists who wish to use it to mold society after their own precepts of morality. Standing on a soapbox in the park saying that everyone should bugger his brother is sort of amusing, but harmless enough. Going into a school under formal government approval and doing so, and worse, dismissing disagreement as "hate speech", is neither harmless nor conservative.

I think that everyone is conservative to the degree that they don't wish their own lives altered by someone else and progressive to the degree that they wish to inflict their own practices on others by coercion. That's sort of a sad definition of "progressive" but it seems accurate enough these days.

As far as nature vs. nurture with regard to human sexual behavior, I'd say the jury is pretty much still out on that one. Maybe both. I really couldn't give an intelligent opinion on it.
