Eight of us had a meal at L'Maison in Cincinnati way back in the late 70's. It was an expensive restaurant and the bill was about $300, so we put $350 in cash on the table and left. (None of us had credit cards back then.) While we were waiting for our cabs to arrive, the maitre'd came out and asked if the service was acceptable. We said it was very good. He said: "Then why didn't you leave a tip?" We explained that we did and he accused us of skipping out without leaving a tip. I suggested that he check with the bus boy who cleared the table. He spun on his heels and literally ran back into the restaurant.

He didn't come back out.

I guess that busboy wasn't as slick as he thought he was!

I remember my dear Mother and Father went out to eat one night (they didn't do that very often) and being the nibblers that they were their dinner and beverage bill came to about $25. Mom put the bill on her cc and left $5 on the table. When the cc bill came, that $25 showed up as a $200 charge and she was highly upset. She pulled out her receipt and and I showed her that she had left the line for “tip” blank and that it was probably how the charge ended up higher. She called the cc company and cleared it up and then marched down to the restaurant and ended up walking out with gift certificates totaling $500 (which she gave away to her friends). G-d how I miss that lady!
