That’s weird, I once worked for a grocery Store, Night clean-up where we Mopped and Waxed just after the crew that re-stocked finished up. I was waxing around a Safe and there was $350.00 in a paperclip on top of the safe ... I turned it in to the Manager the next day and no-one thought it was a big deal at all. We worked for the same company and that was company Money. If the Re-stocking Crew had found it they would have done the same.
I’m not buying the Employee Theft thing at all unless things have that radically changed in the last 30 years.

(now I did pay the Butcher to leave a case of beer out back at 3:00AM when I got off, but that wasn’t theft, I was 16 and I paid the Butcher well (still illegal, but in my mind not wrong) he was a Company Man, Family with the Owner too now that I think about it)
It was just my experiences working on the inventory side of things. We were an independent company, and businesses hired us to generally get the books straight.
One business claimed a loss of around 5k a couple years ago. Pretty good considering the economy. The boss got suspicious, because even in good years, they lost a couple thousand. He was expecting it to show much larger losses.
After going through all the records, I found a 60k loss, that the manager had attempted to conceal, through a one-time adjustment of obsolete stock.
It would be difficult for shoplifting to rack up 60k in losses, on a business that in a good year might expect 5k in profit over employee salaries.
There are all kinds of games I’ve seen people try to do. But, with outside intervention, the books always come true. Always.
