"The Big Broadcast is a Sunday night tradition for families throughout the WAMU listening area. Each week, Big Broadcast host Ed Walker offers listeners priceless recordings of popular radio programs from the '30s, '40s and '50s. Priceless, especially, for a man whose first sentence as a child was, 'Turn the radio on.' "

7/6/58 "The Blinker Matter" Matter #596 Bob Bailey, Paula Winslowe (Marsha Foreman), B.J. Thompson (Gus), Harry Bartell, Stacy Harris, Vic Perrin, Bob Bruce ; Writer - Robert Stanley ; Producer/Director - Jack Johnstone ; Announcer - Roy Rowan ; Expense Account Total - $434.50 ; v ; A foggy night in San Francisco bay, a beautiful girl, and a killer. Fred Wills, The Surity Mutual Limited Insurance Company, calls Johnny for help. The company holds a $50,000 life policy on 51 year old Oriental trinket and curio importer Andrew Foreman. Foreman is missing. Wife Marsha, age 35, is the sole beneficiary. Dollar talks to her. She says that the previous evening a man dressed in a seaman's jacket paid a visit to her husband. The seaman gave his name as Blinker, possibly because he is always blinking his eyes. She gives a complete physical description of Blinker. Her husband left with Blinker and was gone all night. Dollar goes to see an old friend, Detective Lieutenant Scapella. Wayne Arnold, Foreman's attorney of 3-4 years, calls Scapella while Johnny is there to say that he has just gotten a phone call from Blinker. Dollar heads to Arnold's office to find out what Blinker had to say. Blinker wanted $5000 - or else, and then he hung up. It sounded like ransom. Dollar then trails Arnold, who went to Golden Gate park where a woman got into his car and kissed him - it was Marsha Foreman. Later, Dollar confronts Marsha with what he has seen. She denies making up a story about Blinker. She says that Foreman has been making a lot of money later. Dollar finds out that the most recent import of Foreman's imports came from the Indian Princess. Dollar heads for the waterfront and stops in Gus' Cafe. The owner, a big woman named Gus knows Blinker the seaman. She says that he has disappeared. She said he came in from the Indian Princess with little carved elephants that he said was going to make him a lot of money. He left his stuff in the back of Gus' Cafe. Dollar checks it out and finds the elephant's leg screws off and inside is a packet of white narcotics powder. Johnny then finds Blinker's floating dead body. Dollar then locates a whole shipment of the elephants. Someone shoots at Johnny. Dollar wounds him. It is Foreman. Blinker had discovered a shipment of six inch high carved elephants with hollow legs containing the packets of white narcotics powder, and has set out to blackmail the importer. Foreman caught up with him and killed him. (24:14)
