The best renditions of the anthem I have heard were at IU basketball games during the Bob Knight era. Indiana, of course, has a world class music school centered on opera, so there was serious talent on campus. The practice was to have the anthem sung straight, no gimmicks, by someone (faculty, I believe) with a big-time operatic voice. Very powerful.

It was all about the anthem, not about giving some twit a turn on stage.
