VENTURA, Calif. -- A Secret Service agent assigned to protect Nancy Reagan is recovering after accidentally shooting himself in the hip at a sheriff's department shooting range.

Ventura County sheriff's spokesman Capt. Mike Aranda says the gun went off as the agent was putting it back in its holster Friday at the range in Camarillo. The agent was hospitalized with a non-life-threatening injury to his hip. His name was not released.

Nobody else was injured.

Why is Nancy Reagan being protected at taxpayer expense. She wasn’t president. She wasn’t queen.

Cease any protection for her. If she wants it, let her pay out of pocket the actual cost incurred.

Because until Bush II, the First Family got lifetime protection. Starting with Bush II, they get 10 years.

Why not question it?

The President has secrets, etc. I can see protecting him with an agent. Once he passes, why does the wife need protection at tax payer expense. The Clintons have millions. If Bill passes away, why would Hillary need secret service?

(Below is probably for Jackie O)

In 1968, as a result of presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy’s assassination, Congress authorized protection of major presidential and vice presidential candidates and nominees (Pub.L. 90-331). In 1965 and 1968, Congress also authorized lifetime protection of the spouses of deceased presidents unless they remarry and of the children of former presidents until age 16.[3]

Congress passed legislation in 1994 stating that presidents who enter office after January 1, 1997 receive Secret Service protection for 10 years after leaving office. Presidents who entered office prior to January 1, 1997 will continue to receive lifetime protection (Treasury Department Appropriations Act, 1995: Pub.L. 103-329).

Her husband may have disclosed classified information to her. This makes her a bit of an espionage target.

The First Lady is also a symbolic terrorist target.

I bet he prefaced it by saying, “This is a Glock 40. I’m the only one, that I know of, in this room professional enough to carry it.”

Clinton canceled live long protection and it started AFTER he left - so he has it. Not too obvious, is it?

“His name was not released. “ Thank goodness for that.

Still, he’ll be picking up a new nickname from his SS buddies. “ol’ shoot TO the hip” is my guess.

yes the world is full of crazies.

I don’t have secret service protection so why does an unelected person who’s my peer get it? She could pay it out of her own money if she wants it.

If someone was getting it, wouldn’t it be someone truly at threat (Sarah Palin) who a potential presidential candidate then a widow of a president who last served 24 years ago?

If you had any clue how much she was HATED by liberals, you’d understand why she needs that protection. Even Palin has it easy compared to her.

#1 All guns are always loaded.
#2 KEEP YOUR FINGER OFF THE TRIGGER UNTIL YOU ARE READY TO FIRE.
