There is a HUGE wrestling match at PSU tomorrow. Iowa is coming in with a 72 meet unbeaten streak. PSU however, is the one ranked #1. PSU has a coach (Cael Sanderson) who never lost a match in college at Iowa State. He is considered a God in wrestling circles and PSU came up with $1M/year (a lot of it private money) to turn the program around. He did it in a blink of an eye. PSU is loaded and only getting better.

“The jobs in this community 23 miles southwest of Williamsport have disappeared the way timber once vanished from surrounding forests. “

That’s quite a trick to get timber to disappear, leaving forests in it’s wake.

I grew up in the North and wrestled for many years (beginning in 2nd grade in Wausau, WI). There is no greater or pure form of one on one competition where intellect, sheer will, and endurance is displayed. I owe all of my determination and fortitude to those many years on the mat.
Upon moving to the South a few years ago, I was aghast to find wrestling missing from the schools and colleges. The Southern perception of the sport is somewhat absurd. I miss being able to follow great programs like Iowa and PSU.

And, in an era when Title IX requirements have decimated four-year college wrestling programs everywhere, 33 remain in Pennsylvania, nearly twice as many as in second-place Iowa, which has 19.

Iowa has about 1/4 the population of Pennsylvania. Throw in Oklahoma and you cover almost all the wrestling interest in the nation. Oh, and 'go hawks'!

I’d love to watch this on TV, but the Big Ten channel on cable is showing women’s basketball instead. No thanks!

Penn State has the best stable of freshman wrestlers in the country. Sanderson has an incredible eye for talent and no one thought they'd be performing as well as they are. Iowa lost twice this year in the Midlands Championships. Their streak is in dual matches. I hope Penn State puts a hurtin' in them.

Pennsylvania produces great wrestlers. But then, so does New Jersey. I grew up in Oklahoma and then moved to NJ. In Oklahoma, if you didn't play football, you wrestled. The college guys (OSU) were our coaches. What a program. In NJ, I saw a lot of high school wrestling matches outdraw the football games.

Don't mess with wrestlers. They're crazy.
