Milton Babbitt has died

Milton Babbitt, godfather of American ascetic music, has died aged 94. He was far more than his music let on. A mathematician and wit, he once taught Stephen Sondheim, who spoke of him ever after with warm appreciation.

In a 2004 interview, Sondheim said: 'Babbitt taught me what long-line composition is about, how to organise music over a span of time. It has to be the musical equivalent of a plot in a play.'

Being the teacher of Sondheim.

Not too shabby as far as legacies go.

Haven’t paid attention to Babbitt since the late ‘60s. He was a composer more to read about than listen to.

Listened to about 10 seconds. Awful!

Inquiring minds want to know: Did Groucho Marx have white hair before he died?

We did not love this music. I even tried the String Quartet, figuring it would be recognizable music. Nope.

Since the gentleman was a mathematician, it probably makes sense if you run the equations. My crazy 9-year-old would probably like it, but I’m not even going to try or he’ll be checking out CDs from the library.

No, not too shabby at all. I lived in NYC when Sondheim was in his prime and was fortunate enough to see some of his shows.

Like Twain wrote about Wagner, it’s not as bad as it sounds.
