Mercury News interview: Wally Cherwinski, ultimate Apple fan

In a time-honored ritual you could set your iPad clock to, thousands of faithful fanboys and fangirls made their annual trek this past week to San Francisco, gathering for the 27th Macworld in their nearly spiritual quest for all things Apple.

Among them was Wally Cherwinski, who, for the sake of journalistic expediency, we shall refer to here as the Ultimate Apple Fan.

Certainly, he has competition. But the 65-year-old Canadian has just as much Apple cred as anyone at Macworld. For goodness sake, the guy owns so much Apple gear, from iPhones to iPads to iPods, that he maintains a database on his iPad listing the processor, year of purchase, tech specs and price of each holy relic. And, later this weekend, he and his wife are scheduled to leave on their fourth MacMania cruise, this one heading around the tip of South America with 200 other jolly Apple faithful.

In other words, Cherwinski eats, drinks, breathes, dreams -- and even cruises -- Apple.

We sat down at Macworld with Cherwinski, who now teaches and consults in the communications field, and together examined the murky depths of his Mac-centric passion. His answers have been edited for space.

Q. When did you first bite into Apple?

A. It was 1984 when we bought our first 128K, the original Mac, with a little 7-inch black-and-white display and a 400K floppy drive. My wife's a writer and she didn't want to learn to use a computer, she just wanted to write, and getting into the Applesphere seemed like the right way to do it. Once the Mac got into the house, I was hooked, too, and things just happened after that.

Q. Why the big love?

Or maybe “Wally Cherwinski, Ultimate Douche”.

I wish Apple would come out with the iGroom, so Wally could clean up a little.

Please restrict your apple pimping articles to chat - and not the main forum - and most certainly not a sidebar.
