This guy misses the point completely. China could dump the dollar, but it would hurt them. Not just because of their reserves, but because they cant sell their products to the U.S. if they are too expensive. The world isnt only about dollars and cents, it be foolish to imagine everyone is motivated solely by money. To some, power and anything of intrisic value, whatever that might be could be of interest. Maybe to the Chinese, selling their bonds will impact them, but under the right circumstances, the reward might outweight the risk.

Actually we do have what they want: the products of our fields and farms. They will re-value the yuan, just before they start buying up wheat/corn/soybeans etc.*
Remember, the Free Trade crowd here on FR have always said 'those dollars will come back"
Yep, they will.... just like the Soviets did when they knew they were going to have a bad harvest.
*The Chinese believe the world is going to get hit with large meteors in the very near future.

If they don’t come back, where do they go? It’d be ideal if they evaporated, given the way our government spends them.

They will re-value the yuan, just before they start buying up wheat/corn/soybeans etcSince we don't accept yuan for wheat/corn/soybeans etc, that wouldn't help them very much.
Remember, the Free Trade crowd here on FR have always said 'those dollars will come back"
If they bought Treasuries and agency securities, those dollars already came back. If they sell the securities and buy our products, will the protectionists whine more or less?

No, the meaning of the word “diplomacy” won’t change, we’ll just be forced back to it’s original meaning. “Give me what I want and I won’t hurt you too badly.” Oddly enough, isn’t that what the IRS says to us on an annual basis?

I didn’t know that they believed that. That’s a game changer. But meteors could hit anywhere, including the USA.

I guess E&I bonds are the better bet then because they’re at least a holder may redeem them without a discount.

This is the first that I’ve heard of China thinking we’re about to get hit by a very large meteor.
Got a link or source I can see?

That, and this:
“On a deeper level, there is no realistic way to move all of the dollar portfolio into hard assets. Commodities and precious metals markets are simply too small”
The old, owe a grand, and the banks own you. Owe a million and you own the banks. I hope the Chinese keep sabre rattling and driving down the value of the dollar so I can buy more.

I was shown website in Chinese where they were discussing it.
(A commodities broker wanted me to go into wheat and corn futures.)
I printed out the page, then took that print out another individual who reads Chinese and confirmed it. I'm happy I did, commodities are all rising,
China is buying.

Now that's something worth remembering. Thanks, and thanks for the links.

That's fine with me, I'm now in foodstuffs commodities.... but the slubs who aren't, will now be competing with the Chinese... just to fill their bellies.

In the event of a 1929-style crash, whoever has cash and hard assets can buy stuff here really cheap.

nothing comes close to the dollar paper market for depth). That should be the tip-off right there...
