A valuable pedigreed cat that went missing from its New Zealand home turned up two days later a little different — it had been surgically castrated.

>

"What am I supposed to do now? I can't exactly get someone to sew them back on," she told the newspaper.

It’s a relatively new thing in the furry-loving do-gooder group to catch stray cats, have them neutered, and release them back in the neighborhood where they were caught. The idea, of course, being to reduce the number of strays by eliminating breeder males.

I suspect that is what happened in this case.

If so, I have very little sympathy for the cat owner. If, indeed this was a pedigree animal that he was renting out for stud, he should have kept it under much better control. If the animal was just roaming around on public property — or private property other than the owners... oh well.

Of my five cats, all but one have been toms who adopted me. First order of business was a visit to the vet for the ole snip-snip and a check-up (including vaccinations).

That said, missing for only two days isn't really sufficient time for the adoption of a new human.

OK, the cat joke:

A schoolteacher was giving some young kids a lesson in biology. She had a tomcat that she showed the kids and let them pet it. Then she asked them what they thought held the cat’s tail on.

Johnny said “I think it’s the skin”.

Susie said “I can feel bones and I think that’s what holds it on”.

The teacher looked at Tommy and asked him. Tommy replied, “Judging by the size of those nuts, I’d say it was bolted on.”

How in the world can I respond to this???
I’ve never allowed my critters to wander without a leash; I’ve kept my indoor critters neutered and vaccinated, and was one of the first people in the country to have seen that my cat had rabies vaccines on a regular basis, even though the vet said, “For in INSIDE CAT??” (And what do I carry in on my shoes, pray, tell?) Even though the cat was belled, that was how we found him when he went ‘splorin’.)
[As an aside, he was one of the first cats in the country to have contracted feline leukemia and survived it.]
My last male cat was neutered before I knew he was one of only 200 in the US of A...what did I lose? Not much...he was an awesome cat!!! Money would never have given me what the cat did.

As long as you don’t prefer all your males neutered...

Or how about some kitten on a stick? That’s what we call the chicken on a stick at our local Chinese place. I’ve never seen a cat in the vicinity of that joint.

MAexile ~The cat was making a big racket, and a neighbor took matters into their own hands.

Grizzled Bear ~ So the cat manufactured sporting goods. Why should that bother the neighbor? That's no reason to rip the poor cat's nuts off!

Agreed. Rackets are made with cat gut, not cat nuts.

A common mistake...

My family raised persians for a time. You do NOT let breeding stock out loose. At least the person who had it neutered was kind enough to let it live, instead of just shooting it or having it put down. Owner is an idiot!

You are correct. Even if the cat is just a plain old cat if you love it keep it inside. As I have heard my vet say “outside cats live short violent lives”

I wasn't able to find anything other than the AP article so I don't know if she let the cat run free. If she did then, yeah, she's an idiot.

Certainly there are lots of risks to kitties going outside. We now live in a rural area with lots of fun things for kitties to do outside. They love to go out & I would hate to keep them in against their will. We lost one to a coyote that moved into the area last summer. I loved her more than I can say, but she was already used to going outside (she’d been abandoned & had learned to feed herself on mice & birds). I would’ve been fighting to keep her in. We now have 3 females who go out on occasion but stay very close to home & one neutered male who rambles a bit. I want them to enjoy life, not just be alive.

Maybe all of your neighbors don’t enjoy your kitties as much as you do.

Just a thought.

Lots of kitties in the neighborhood, even a dog or two. No one seems to mind too much.

I don’t know your kitties; but, personally, I don’t like any of ‘em in my garden or poopin’ in my yard. I don’t shout it to everyone, but I figure my yard is MINE, and I don’t want others cats in it any more than I want others dogs in it.
