"It was a slight dig at us big-city cops, though. I think we interact with a lot more people on a a daily basis. But yes, we need to be a little more on guard than rural cops."

I would concur with that. I would also say that, working for an insurance defense PI firm, our surveillance folks get a lot less hassle from municipal officers who realize we're just doing our jobs too, than we do from rural deputies who feel like we're out-of-towners "spying" on their sheriff's voters.

Again though, I'll be the first to admit that statement is a general rule and I'm aware of exceptions that cut both ways.

If you review my posting history here at FR, I think it's evident that I'm not "anti-cop." I do believe however, that police should be held to a higher standard. We empower them with deadly force, pay their salaries, and expect them to enforce the laws we have passed through a legislative process. In other words, they are holders of a sacred trust and the confidence of the citizenry. When they deliberately betray that, or even just lose sight of that, they need to be held to account and all too frequently, are not. IMHO, the truly professional officers who are in fact dedicated public servants should be the most outspoken critics of unprofessional conduct because it reflects poorly on them and compounds the difficulty of their jobs. Of course that's generally true of most professions, but few if any have the potential for adverse and serious impact on the public that law enforcement does.

The cop in this thread deserves kudos, and if that had been my dog, I would also have been exceedingly grateful, although from the sounds of it, he probably viewed the affair as simply doing his job.

You're ok with me, too lol. Sorry about the Transpo gig, although you will like Ft. Eustis a whole lot better than Leonard Wood.

I think my BOLC II is at Fort Lee, VA. I just got out of OCS last month. I’m NYS National Guard.

Interesting....They were talking about consolidating the logistics OBCs when I was getting out, but I wasn’t aware they had gone ahead and done it. You should still be able to get to Virginia Beach on the weekends :-)

Home made oatmeal-raisin cookies sometimes says it all.

I’ll be in Fort Lee in two weeks...on business. Who knows maybe we will run into each other if you stay in this AO (NCR)

I would definitely keep an eye on Blue... sure there are Spring Break plans. What a wonderful story about the officer.... perhaps you could write him an “atta boy” letter to his Captain or something? I would mention community policing... that is always a good one.

Thank God for the happy ending!

Many years ago my EX [note emphasis] left the front gate open when he left for work.

I let my Ibizan Hounds out the back door and when I called them back in, only Minny showed up.

I went out front to see where Red and Renny were only to find the gate blowing in the freezing February wind.

Still in my jammies and slippers, I jumped into the car and went to look for them.

They can run for hours at steady 25 mph lope and I thought that was the last I'd ever see of them.

Having gone up and down RT 40 several times and finding nothing, I turned up the back road to the old KOA camp.

I saw eyes glowing in the field and jumped out of the car and quietly, slowly crept towards the eyes.

I seized the neck attached to the eyes nearest me only to hear a loud SNORT!...from the whitetail doe I'd just captured.

I let go and she and her fawn bounded off into the night.

By this time, I was in tears.

I took one more trip up RT 40 and on my way back home, saw Renny trotting right down the center line with Red pacing her on the ridge north of the road.

I was helpless.

I couldn't try and catch them for fear of provoking a game of "chase me!" so I drove behind Renny until she disappeared over the bank.

When I got home, they were both sitting at the front door, waiting to be let in.

[their previous owners let them run the countryside with no concerns and this was "normal" for them]

At first I wanted to kill them both but ended up crying and hugging them instead.

When they went back in the living room, sensible Minny looked at them, from her toasty comforter pile on the sofa, with a glare that simply said "Idiots".

If you wonder how I could mistake a deer for my dogs, this is why;

A pack of dogs or herd of sofa deer?

:)

/very happy in the middle of slow-paced, fairly unpopulated nowhere

I bet. Virginia Beach is sweet. I used to go to NORFOLK and USJFCOM 4 times a year.
