I was 5 when I started school and 16 when I graduated.

I suspect this kind of thing happens a lot. I was working for a public school preschool when they took the kids on a field trip. No one counted the kids getting on the bus. No one counted the kids getting off the bus. It was only after they took the kids inside a building and enough adults arrived (most of the supervision arrived separately as the preschool buses are full and have each seat assigned to a specific child) that they thought to make sure everyone was accounted for.

One child was missing. So, was the special needs preschooler left at school? Or on the bus which is on it's way somewhere else? Or has this kid gotten loose inside the building or been snatched by a pervert?

Luckily for all involved the kid was on the bus. And instead of being very upset about what could have happened because of their idiotic carelessness, the teachers were quite ticked off that they were probably facing a lecture when they got back.

I’m 49 and school started in August when I attended school in Memphis and Mississippi. School usually ended BEFORE June.

There is no need for another paid person just to count kids. School bus driver can do that or find a new job. It ain’t hard to walk to the back of the bus and see if any kids are still on board.

The bus driver failed but we aren’t talking about an infant, the kid could have gotten off the business through the windows or the emergency exit, and yes a 7 year old can work it.

I teach. I am required to know where all my students are at any time, and inquire about extended absences.

It boggles me that they would take kids out anywheres and not have them sound off or count off.

Heck, I used to be a patrol leader, and we did that every single time we went anywhere. All I had to say was ‘Sound off!’ and everyone would count. If for whatever reason that number did not end where it should, we stopped counted again, and then went back to find the missing person.

I just don’t understand how someone driving a bus could leave a kid behind. Check the bus before you drive back. Go through all the rows. Greyhound bus drivers are trained to do this, and they will not leave until they have the correct count.

If DUPONT ran the schools children wouldn't be left on the bus....and....They would probably learn to read, too.

There are plenty of reasons to have another adult on the bus. For example: bus caused crushing and dragging deaths when exiting and entering the bus and crossing the road, child on child sexual and physical abuse, and seeing that children are safely secured in seat belts. And...In the case of a serious accident being another person on the scene to help the children escape the bus.

Signing off ( Yes, having **signatures**, just like on a scuba diving boat) would be one of the duties of two person team.

By the way...Does your district have bus safety drills ( especially for exiting the bus)? Our district does not.

My husband and I are cub scout leaders. Our eight year olds often do not have the manual dexterity to efficiently button their scout shirt. It is still a struggle for them. Many can not cut with scissors very well. I learned that when we cut out the patterns for their pine wood derby cars. ( I am not kidding.)

Hopefully he will be fired; it should be common sense for an adult to CHECK for any sleeping (or hiding) students before parking the bus and walking away.

I take it you didn’t read the article, else you would have known that the kid fell asleep on the bus.

The adult is culpable here, not the young kid.
