Is the Mossie choice due to budget considerations?

I own a Moss 500 Tac.
I love it.

PRO, and I own a Remington...
If you have the bucks get him a Benelli. If not, go American, Mossberg or Remington.
You can't go wrong with any of them.

Mossie’s a good weapon. Don’t put a grip stock on it.

The interchangeable barrels are a nice feature. There’s even a black powder configuration.

Good gun, I have a Mossberg 835 myself. But I think the 930, which is more expensive, has more features on it. I don’t think the 500 will lead you wrong though

For a budget shotgun it’s pretty darn nice.
I’ve had one for 5 years and love it.

The Moss 500 is a great, inexpensive home defense weapon. God forbid he ever needs it, it will be ready.
If the shotgun is for heavy shooting (hunting/range/etc). something a little more solid, like a Remington may be better.
Agree with the comment about you being a great parent.

Mixed reviews. Back when I got a Mossberg 500 Camper Combo, pistol grip and 18 1/2 inch barrel, the trigger guard and assembly was housed in plastic. That eventually chipped and made cycling the pump and feeding shells unreliable.
I might buy one if they corrected that heinous design flaw, but not otherwise.

Consider a 930 SPX. Semi auto is preferred.

I certainly would not turn down a 500. They are quite dependable for the money. The Navy uses them.
If I didn’t already have shotguns, I would buy one.

What's not to like? Interchangeable barrels and all that stuff...
Get him a MEC loader next Christmas. :)
Congratulations on his graduation from The Citadel, btw. He's already a better man than most of us.

I have a Mossberg 500 Persuader. My only reason for purchasing it was because I’m a lefty (safety). If that isn’t a consideration, the Remington 870 Tactical would be my choice.
To: onona
I've owned both a Mossberg 590 and a Remington 870 (and others), and there's no question in my mind that the Remington is the better quality piece. But, the Mossberg will certainly go bang every time you pull the trigger. It's not junk. If it where me I would buy a Remington every time versus a Mossberg.
As a matter of fact, there's an 870 on sale at Davidson's, item # 5077, for only $310.00.
