In International Falls, for example, the overnight low is expected to be around minus-36. Brainerd may see minus-27 and Duluth minus-25.
In the Twin Cities, the low from Thursday night into Friday morning will be around minus-15, with minus-20 readings possible in suburban areas.
The artic air will be escorted by by winds that could produce wind chills as low as minus-30 in the Twin Cities area and minus-50 up north.

Ah! That is tough. :(
I stayed on the third floor of a hotel earlier this winter with my dog in tow. It was definitely not easy taking him outside in the middle of a blizzard. I don’t envy you or your doggie the chore. Hopefully this cold snap won’t last too long.
It gets cold in Minnesota in winter, who knew?
I used to give my Dad the business about it......
"I have to hang up now, Dad. I feel a chill coming over the line."
have to roll sleeves down for a few days
I remember my first winter in Minneapolis. Went to the ‘U’ from northern Iowa. I was astounded at people with parkas and shorts eating ice cream cones from Baskin-Robbins(?) on the streets of Dinkytown.
Southern Wisconsin: We’re expecting -15 tonight and -30 wind chills, high temp of THREE tomorrow.
Got 6 inches of snow earlier this week.
Yippe.
That’s why you run 5w20 synthetic or 0W20 synthetic. Otherwise block/tank heaters and a strong battery (a garaged vehicle is a real plus). Regardless, they still groan loudly when started (and tend to do so for a little while after too).
The Dakotas get really bad though (out in the open plains) where the windchill will cool a heated car in a matter of minutes when shut off.
I spent a “century”, one winter, in Minneapolis.
-50? -50?!!!!!!!!! Yikes!!!!!
It’s 47 here now and I am freezing. Don’t know how I would survive living up north.
We actually had to work our shift, moving a drilling rig to another location in it. It's surprising that it was not much different than being out in -30 deg. Cold, but still survivable and even tolerable with the proper clothing and face protection.
Yeah, but it's a dry cold.
And yet Somali’s an Hmong flock here. What could be the attraction?
Dry is right.
At that temperature, the dew-point can be, by definition, no higher than -128.6F.
For most people, even a dew-point of 0F is “very dry”.
My little Pom barely makes it off the steps before shes done with “business”
In and out in 15 seconds flat :)
Amazingly the POS beater car I drive started right up. My wifes near new Toyota van.. Not so much. it’s waiting on the stealership to come get it and thaw it out.
Nothing like a high mile (300,000+) beater. The engines are so loose they spin over in any weather :)
(BTW 0W20 or 5W20 would run right out the tailpipe of my car once started ;) it’s got 10W40 in it!)
Was 29 below on my digital thermometer last night. This mourning at 7, it has warmed up to -10 and snow is forecast for later. Where I live, it has to warm up to snow, which is why we love snow so much
We were in the St. Cloud area last summer and I felt like I was in Little Mogadishu. Many of the locals blame Catholic Charities for destroying the previous ‘Uffda’ demographic.
Right, there is the option you submit; a heavily broken in engine that would start (if it had a clutch) by bumping it almost anywhere and popping the clutch (no need to roll first). I’ve had a few cars like that in my day (always ran 10W40 in the winter and 50 weight in the summer.
Most of the people there were not even Americans, much less Minnesotans (not too many yermans or scandahoovians doncha' know).
I felt like an idiot giving back money that I didn't deserve (my father was a decorated - silver star/purple heart - veteran of WWII) when these rag heads were collecting SSI.
