CRYSTAL LAKE, Ill - An Illinois man credited his Chihuahua's winter jacket with saving the small canine from a great horned owl attack.
George Kalomiris said he was walking the 4-pound dog, Chico, in the early hours Wednesday in Crystal Lake when the owl swooped out of the darkness and tried to grab the canine, the Chicago Sun-Times reported Tuesday.
However, Kalomiris said the owl could not get a good grip on Chico because of the dog's puffy winter jacket. He said the dog suffered scratches to his head and a puncture wound, but quickly recovered from the injuries.
Rebecca Murphy of the McHenry County Conservation District's Wildlife Resource Center told the Crystal Lake Northwest Herald the owls are "opportunistic" hunters.
"(Owls don't) know the difference between a pet animal or a prey animal," Murphy said. "With a small dog like that, there is a potential that larger raptor species could take them down."
I came home one day to find my two cats and dog on the screened in back porch, looking up into the tree. There sat a golden eagle looking them.
Predators have all the fun.
Cool, except that looks like a 2 lb. dog.
LOL at 52 & 54
Yup, the car chasing monster seagull. The only thing missing is the Monster Quest dramatic music and the monster’s eye.
An acquaintance saw an Owl or a Hawk pick up his white cat in a pasture and carry it off. There have been two reports of Hawks carrying off small dogs here in my town. One showed up back home a couple days later with cuts and wounds so it must have been dropped.
Also have Racoons going through at night and they could easily kill him. It's a wild world out there, lol.
I don’t think they have any idea how strong they really are. When our GSD was still a puppy, he knocked an entire closet door off the hinges. His big, ole head just went sort of through it and he shook it off like it was a snow flake. They are big babies as well. He cried until I gave him a leather chew.
They are strong. I was at the vet with Bubba, the black lab. He’s very friendly and wants to go up and interact with all the dogs, but some of the owners are leery as he is hundred pounds.
So, this woman wants to take her dog out the door but is afraid to pass by Bubba. I assure her that Bubba cannot get to her dog as I have his leash secured to the handle of the heavy wooden chair I’m sitting in.
She starts by, and I feel myself being pulled. I won’t say how much weight he was pulling but ... he pulled me and the heavy chair for several feet.
Sweet little doggie
That is one pissed off looking bird..yikes
Racoons are vile, dirty nasty disease carrying critter. Obiviouly I don’t like them..
“It’s a wild world out there, lol.”
It sure is! I live in the country with, not just hawks and owls, but with cougars and wildcats.
I wish some libs would visit this area. ;o)
I know you will take good care of your puppy...
Another reason not to own little dogs.
Poor thing. Lucky thing!
Looks like that kitty got the BIRD. He’s certainly scaring them.
