I have gotten those call too. Recently in a new twist, solicitors are using software to hijack legitimate cell phone users real phone numbers. The number that shows up in your caller ID is a real person's cell phone & not the solicitors number.

I try to let the poor person know their cell # has been hijacked. It's only happened a couple of times but is becoming more common.

My auto mechanic lost his cell phone, so he got a new one while keeping the same number, and switched carriers. I got a phone call from his old phone! So I guess phone numbers aren’t that secure.

Wouldn’t that defeat the purpose of the call? If I got a call from a salesman using a hijacked number, I’d slam down the phone so fast and I’d never do business with them and their company would remain firmly etched in my memory.

Caller ID spoofing is illegal per a recently passed Federal law. I have received calls from some boiler room claiming to be a credit company. The number showing up on my caller ID is a local person, who has no association with the apparent scammer.
