In case law, an engagement ring is a “completed gift”, it belongs to the prospective bride, unless she engaged (no pun intended) in fraud or deceit. IOW, if she accepted his proposal in good faith, it's her ring.
I've been through this sort of thing and I agree that the solidity of marriage is correlates negatively with the cost of the nuptials.

IOW, if she accepted his proposal in good faith, it's her ring. It appears she might have misled him about her depression, and that would constitute fraud; so he should get the ring back.

Actually, depending on the state she gives it back no matter WHO breaks it off. In some states, if the groom breaks it off, she keeps it. If she does, he gets it back but on Judge Judy she has to give it back no matter what LOL

Not necessarily so. It is in contemplation of marrige. No marriage, return the ring. This has been sued on over and over in small claims, and in a high percentage of cases, the ring goes back to the giver.
