Facebook’s paper value just peaked at fifty billion dollars. Time to go short on Facebook?
I don’t use FB or Twitter at all.
I really don’t see any reason to.
Unfortunately I see teens and college kids spending a large amount of their waking hours on those sites.
Many of my friends at work don’t use it. It seems that “joiners” are all for it but introverted types see social media sites as an intrusion.
I don’t know about other people and those sites. For me, Facebook (the only one I know anything about) was not for me - but then I’m sort of odd I guess. I found them just more of that old exclusive, snotty crap that existed in high school. You’d get tagged, or tag someone to be your “friend”, then you’d never hear from them again; they’d block you from getting certain access to this and that on their “pages” and so on. I’m just who I am and don’t have anything to hide. Some of my extended family members also would post some pretty raunchy comments on my homepage and I had to check it every day to be sure they were deleted, and then also had to delete some of the people who were doing that. Then I got propositioned by some woman on there who I had accepted as a “friend” but didn’t really know after all. (I was afraid to turn anybody down who requested to be a “friend” because we’ve moved a lot over the years and I have met a lot of people.) I finally found a way to escape from it in my “account” area; looked and looked for a way out when I first stumbled into it, but didn’t find it then; so was on for a few months. Got into “Farmville” briefly, then my ISP got to where it wouldn’t access the games on there. I think it’s that I’m too old to play those old games of playing at being “friends”.
I see FaceBook, Twitter, MySpace as being programs to track the movements of Americans.

What amazes me about Facebook, Twitter, MySpace, and other sites is how much private and/or compromising information and pictures that people voluntarily put up online for the world to see. If some young idiot gets busted for DUI you can be sure the local paper will have an idiotic quote from his Facebook account. There are untold numbers of stupid young girls who have their images peddled all over internet peeper sites after they put up a racy picture of themselves on some social networking site.
At some point I hope people catch a clue and collectively remove their heads from where the sun don’t shine...
If Facebook falls like AOL did; I may short it. If you recall, in 2000 AOL stock was so over priced that it was able to purchase the far more substantial Time Warner publishing for a stock swap.
Then the value of AOL collapsed, but by virtue of stock swap has Time Warner.
The same could happen to Facebook. In 2000 the movie “You Got Mail” had added to the buzz in favor of AOL. In 2011 the movie “Social Network” is doing the same for Facebook.
May be time to short the social network industry.

They probably only accepted the friend invitation/request from someone who was probably a total stranger out of politeness but none of that will matter as the persons career/ reputation is ruined.
Social media like Facebook will sure make it easier for some future NKVD/gestapo to round up resisters. Catch one and go looking for his Facebook friends.
It may not be Facebook, Myspace or Twitter but as time goes on “social media” will become more entwined in our every day life, not less.

Do I really care about my cousin's vacation at Disneyland and pictures of his bratty kids? No!
Do I really want people I went to high school with 30 years ago to find me? No!
Do I really want to put personal information about myself online so my employer (and potential future employers) can find it? Hell no!
There are about a hundred other good reasons for not using Facebook.
Personally, I only use them to glean info, not provide it. The whole idea of putting your life out on the net is.. Well, creepy, and just a bit narcissistic. Not to mention dangerous.
OTOH: There are those who have used the medium for great advantage. A little lady from Alaska comes to mind...
I don’t do twitter, but if one of my facebook friends sends me spam or tries to advertise anything to me that I think is commercial- I “defriend” them immediately. I am on facebook for the friends and family interaction NOTHING ELSE !
All of those applications you name can and someday will fall into the trash heap of history.
Social media is here to stay. IMHO.
