Veteran ESPN broadcaster Ron Franklin was pulled from the air before Saturday's Fiesta Bowl after he called ESPN sideline reporter Jeannine Edwards "sweetcakes" during an off-air spat, Sports By Brooks reported Sunday.
Franklin and Edwards were scheduled to work together for Friday's Chik-fil-A Bowl and the incident occurred in a pre-game production meeting also attended by ESPN announcers Ed Cunningham and Rod Gilmore.
When the conversation turned to the subject of Gilmore's wife Marie being elected mayor of Alameda, Calif., Edwards tried to join in but was shut down by Franklin, according to the report.
Why dont you leave this to the boys, sweetcakes, Franklin told her.
Dont call me sweetcakes, I dont like being talked to like that, Edwards responded.
Franklin then said, OK then, a**hole.

It was an obvious mistake to call her sweet cakes. She is no sweet cakes by any stretch of the definition..
That is good. Actually playing the game, and the higher the level the better, adds value to the telecast for those who have not played. I played three sports in high school including football, but would not add benefit to a college or pro football game. But I have good verbal skills and would not look like a complete idiot.
I would look like a dunce if I tried to make comments on a volleyball game, rugby, soccer, cricket . . . roller derby, etc. Most of the girls make idiots of themselves on the football games. . . IMHO
Yeah, I usually mute her too. But I usually mute the male announcers too though — Mike Tirico and the MNF crew is especially bad. Man, I miss Keith Jackson.
ESPN really started to go downhill when they started putting Olby, Rome and guys like them on — guys who were more interested in putting themselves over than covering sports. “Hey, look at me, I’m so funny and witty! Look at me! Oh by the way, Red Sox 3, Yankees 2. Look at me!”
The guys were polite about it but laughed and told the audience that they were paid by Texas Tech to announce Tech sports, not by the other team. But sometimes, we turn off the volumn on the tv and watch the game, but listen to the Tech announcers. So much better in my opinion
You just don’t get it do you? Another man would have stayed out of a coversation that didn’t involve him.
The woman couldn’t keep her mouth shut or mind her own business and got rung up for it.
Of course, since she’s a woman she feels she’s entitled to do and say what she wants and not be held accountable for it.
I bet that sounds familiar to you doesn’t it sweetcakes?
Years ago I did play-by-play for a private high school in Arkansas. They went undefeated, which made the job fun, and played a Missouri team in the play offs. A radio station in Miz paid me to allow them to simulcast my broadcast and asked if I could be impartial. My local team got mad at me because they said I appeared to be favoring the Miz team.
DITTOS!
I think they have a few of them . . . Don't know what kind of "supplements" they feed them . . . LOL!
I wish I could remember some of the more humorous stupid things we’ve heard commentators say this year. We are Bama fans, and hubby will watch games over and over again. That way we can hear the stupidity over and over again, too. I don’t know why hubby doesn’t turn the volume off, but there have been times when we have laughed so hard that I was crying due to the stupid things genius commentators say.
I do want to put in a plug for Todd Blackledge who is the least stupid of commentators. Maybe we love him most because he loves to come to Bama games and speaks highly of the experience. I also have come to like Gary Danielson. My least favorite of the big-time game announcers are Herbstreit (sp?) and his cohort who has been doing this forever but his name escapes me. They say the dumbest things. Ah yes. It’s Brent Musberger (sp?). Ugh.
Dont blame her. What a jerk.
IMO the blame may lie on both sides of the ball on this one. I don’t condon Franklin’s remarks but neither to I condon Edwards running to the boss. She handled it badly I think. Her response should have been along the lines of “I don’t appreciate that remark and you are better than that. Please don’t do it again. Okay?” If Franklin failed to honor her request then it would be time to go upstairs.
JMO and obviously yours differs.
Honestly, most of these men played ball at the college and pro level and should be able to just describe what is going on with little effort. Instead they just repeat worn out phrases and probably are more concerned with how much air time they get as opposed to the other guy in the booth.
Thats cool, as long as you dont go runnin to daddy if you get upset, kitten.
I work in the office side of an oil company, and we have engineers and executives in my office. It is not uncommon for swears to be tossed about in meetings. Everyone has a lot of pressure and can leave the personal at the door.
What did he say?
She brought it on herself by telling on him to the boss. When cheerleaders tell on people staring at them, we will probably have this thread about that.
Uhh...I’m guessing it wasn’t the “sweetcakes” that got him suspended.
I can’t recall the exact comment but while interviewing a black athlete, Greenberg dropped the racist epithet “coon” into the conversation. The next day, he apologized and it was never mentioned again.
I always go for the local radio. Even with a bias towards the team they work for, they are usually more knowledgeable about both teams than the ESPN/ABC/CBS/FOX/TNT guys. They also have a tendency to get into the interesting parts of players - what they want to do after college, whether they were Marines - rather than focus on some “human interest” story intended to make people get emotional during a football game.
And I really liked the Tech locals.
Can they not find models without tats ?
I would much prefer watching the cheerleaders between plays than watching any sports announcers. They could still talk, as long as I can watch the cheerleaders while they talk.
I also like that the TTU announcers say who is writing in and where they are, especially our military folks listening in from overseas!
