ESPN Broadcaster Ron Franklin Pulled From Air After Calling Jeannine Edwards 'Sweetcakes,’

Veteran ESPN broadcaster Ron Franklin was pulled from the air before Saturday's Fiesta Bowl after he called ESPN sideline reporter Jeannine Edwards "sweetcakes" during an off-air spat, Sports By Brooks reported Sunday.

Franklin and Edwards were scheduled to work together for Friday's Chik-fil-A Bowl and the incident occurred in a pre-game production meeting also attended by ESPN announcers Ed Cunningham and Rod Gilmore.

When the conversation turned to the subject of Gilmore's wife Marie being elected mayor of Alameda, Calif., Edwards tried to join in but was shut down by Franklin, according to the report.

“Why don’t you leave this to the boys, sweetcakes,” Franklin told her.

“Don’t call me sweetcakes, I don’t like being talked to like that,” Edwards responded.

Franklin then said, “OK then, a**hole.”

Considering some of the on-air “talent” ESPN has hired, I find this decision more than a little curious.

My wife would handle the situation directly with the man involved. I probably wouldn’t even know it happened because she would take care of it directly with him and not tattle to anyone. But, thats the woman I married.

I cannot stand those sideline reporter-ettes. They add nothing to the game and blabber on and on about things that are tangential to the game.

Agree ... NFL season ticket holder and when I attend games I see them wandering around on the sidelines. They look completely out of sync with the surroundings ... even more so than when you see them on TV.

It’s explained. They were in a meeting and they were discussing one of the guy’s wives being elected mayor. She said something and doofus decided she should shut up and keep out of the conversation. I think a response of some well chosen vulgarities would have been better than what she said, but that’s just me. In short, he just said ‘shut up and let us talk.’. Who the heck does he think he is?

Well, “sweetcakes” is actually kind of nice—a term of endearment, really. I suspect what did him in was “a....hole.”

I think what did him in was "leave this to the boys". He might as well have called her a dumb broad.

Well played!

Heck, there are—ahem—men on this site who will run to the mods for less than a much-deserved “@ssh*le”.....

Yes. Take out the male/female aspect and you have one person saying to a co-worker ‘shut up, we’re talking.’. But he’s saying it her because she is female. He wouldn’t have told another man to butt out. Probably wouldn’t have the balls.

But Joy(less) Beyhar is still on the air after calling a young girl, who has never done anything to Joy, a Hooker because Joy doesn’t like the girl’s mother.

Remember when the females claimed that they wanted no special treatment. Now they run to rat out colleagues when they say something they dont like and the guy gets canned. Thanks feminazis.

You took the words right out of my mouth.

Erin Andrews is an exception. She is hot, dresses appropriately, knows the game, and asks good questions. Never see a coach with a “this girl is stupid” look on his face.

Bet she will not ask Chip Kelly a stupid question at half-time next week like most of the guys do.

My favorite Chip Kelly comment was when asked about defensive adjustments at half-time, replied, “I have no idea, I coach the offense “

As we know radio play-by-play announcers are supposed to “paint” us a picture of what’s going on. A few years ago I heard that old guy who used to call Georgia’s games say “Folks. I wish you could have seen what I just saw.”

I cannot stand those sideline reporter-ettes. They add nothing to the game and blabber on and on about things that are tangential to the game. The only reason they got the job is affirmitive action.

I agree whole-heartedly, as does my older brother. You really have to play the game to understand, not just X's and O's, but the physical demands, the punishment, the speed and quickness of the game, the finesse of the skill positions, etc. The sideline babes are as useless as cheerleaders to the game itself, and their questions and comments routinely are empty and clearly lack understanding.

I like how CBC employs former Olympians like Cassie Campbell
who know and have played the game at a high level. She can and does sound as knowledgable as her male counterparts and
in some cases (like Scott Oake) exceeds..
