I think HP had an auto back up feature.

I have 4 external Seagates, 1T’s and 2T’s, on my PC. I kept them all the same brand so that I only need one Manager program. One went belly up after a year and replaced it. All four now flawless after one year of “on all the time”.

External hardrives continue to get less expensive. I have a 1TB Western Digital Ipicked up at Costco for under $80.

Only 640GB, but it comes with backup software and a three-year warranty for $69.99.

You can hardly go wrong. Newegg makes it really easy to keep track of your warranty, too.

I got a “Mybook” 1 TB drive for not too much money. It’s done quite nicely for my needs.

My recommendation would be to stay away from the Samsung Story Station. We have not had a good experience with these. I love my Seagate FreeAgent Go, however.

OK, So far so good. If size/capacity permits, can I back up more than 1 computer with one external HD?

All hard drives fail. Plan your system with that assumption, and you don’t need to worry about brand names.

I would suggest 1 drive ( pick Seagate or Maxtor) then network the 2nd computer to the drive. Finally, either a 2 nd drive backing up the First or Carbonite on-line backup.

Seagate has created the GoFlex Storage System—which includes the GoFlex Pro—to make it easy for you to upgrade your interface for faster transfer speeds, and access your content on your network, your TV, and everywhere you go.

Offers upgrade cables and kits that make it easy to move up from USB 2.0 to USB 3.0, eSATA or FireWire® 800 for up to 10x faster transfer speeds for your large files and HD movies
The USB 3.0 cable is backward compatible with USB 2.0 interfaces so you can access files from any PC.
Extends your digital life so you can access and share your files from anywhere by pairing your drive with the GoFlex Net media sharing device
View your movies and photos on your TV by pairing your drive with the GoFlex TV HD media player
Learn more about how you can customize your GoFlex Pro

Your standard GoFlex Pro comes with a USB 2.0 cable to connect to your PC or Mac® computer. You also have the option to purchase a “drive only” version that comes without the cable. Select the GoFlex Pro ultra-portable drive—drive only version if:

You are already using a GoFlex ultra-portable drive and want to use the same cable to connect your new GoFlex Pro; or
You want a faster interface than USB 2.0—like USB 3.0, eSATA, or FireWire® 800—right from the start

Costco has a 1TB Seagate that I would stay away from. We got one that crashed the first time it was plugged in. Its replacement lasted less than a week and crashed. However, the Seagate 1.5TB has done great. First thing you might want to do is reformat the drive and just treat it like a regular drive. All the preloaded junk on the drives can be rather irritating.
